Motiva recently teamed up with aramco and SABIC Americas for a shoreline cleanup event with the Galveston Bay Foundation. In less than two hours, volunteers managed to clear 547 pounds of trash from the shoreline! Not only will this help protect our diverse marine life, but it will also improve the water quality and enhance the natural beauty of the Bay. #MotivaProud

CEO of Surge Energy - a Houston based Midland Basin independent oil company ranking as the 5th largest U.S. private oil operator by production
On the 14-year anniversary of the bp Macondo oil spill, it is crucial to reflect on the profound lessons learned from this environmental catastrophe. The tragic explosion and subsequent spill in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010, had devastating consequences for marine ecosystems, coastal communities, and the global environment. Firstly, safety must be an unwavering priority. The Macondo incident revealed the dire consequences of overlooking safety protocols, inadequate risk assessments, and complacency. Secondly, integrity is non-negotiable. The Macondo spill highlighted the need for transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder that short-term gains should never compromise long-term sustainability. #oilgas #oilandgas #oilandgasindustry

20th Anniversary blast from the past, and one of our absolute favorites since we snapped this photo in 2010. In the background you'll notice our blue tanks with yellow handrails, this system at the Ruskin Dam near Mission BC was commissioned to treat 2000GPM (126L/s) of heavily sediment laden water and required to discharge directly into the Stave River. Knowing anglers were still fishing in that effluent not only proved our environmentally friendly chemistry but reinforced our ability to execute on the largest projects under the most stringent environmental regulations. #stormtec20 #watermanagement #sedimentcontrol

Read the article at the Santa Cruz Sentinel, “California’s first new national marine sanctuary in 32 years to ban offshore oil drilling along 100 miles of coastline,” by Paul Rogers, Bay Area News Group—September 6, 2024. “A long-running effort by native tribes and environmentalists to establish the first new national marine sanctuary along California’s coastline in 32 years — the aquatic version of a new national park — where offshore oil drilling would be prohibited forever, reached a key milestone Friday. The Biden administration published the final environmental impact statement for the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary… ‘This is a huge moment for the Chumash People and all who have tirelessly supported our campaign over the years,’ said Violet Sage Walker, chairwoman of the Northern Chumash Tribal Council… NOAA left a gap around Morro Bay out of the new sanctuary to allow undersea cables to connect future offshore wind turbines to the state’s electrical grid. Tribal leaders and environmental groups have suggested that once the wind farms are built, the sanctuary boundaries could be enlarged… ‘There is an interest in a second phase that could expand the sanctuary northward once cables are laid,’ said Wade Crowfoot, California’s secretary of natural resources… Crowfoot said the Newsom administration is very pleased that the sanctuary is at the finish line. ‘It’s a huge deal’…” Read the full story below and at this link. https://lnkd.in/gJZc4Kqt #offshorewind #floatingwind #cleanenergy #renewables #climate #offshorewindca #pacificoffshorewindsummit

NEW: I covered research finding that fossil-fuel drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would leave polar bears at risk of lethal oil spills for Carbon Brief Republicans and Democrats have fought over whether to drill in the refuge since the 1970s. The 7.7m-hectare refuge is home to Indigenous people, all three North American bear species, wolves, caribou and hundreds of bird species. It is also sitting on top of an estimated 11bn barrels of oil. Donald Trump passed a law to enable drilling in the refuge in 2017. It came after nearly 50 attempts from Republicans to pass laws to drill in the wildlife haven. Joe Biden suspended drilling inside the refuge on his first day in office pending an environmental review. But, by law, he is still required to hold a second oil and gas lease sale by December 2024, unless Congress is able to pass legislation undoing Trump's provision. This is yet another example of how Biden's campaign promise of "no new drilling, period" is often being hamstrung by Congress and the courts. It comes as the US continues to pressure other countries to phase out fossil fuels at UN climate talks. The study lead author tells me that polar bears are now at an even greater risk of oil spills because climate change is melting away their sea ice habitat, forcing them to spend more time on land. The subpopulation that use the refuge to raise young is already in decline. As climate journalists we are often told not to focus on polar bears, but I can't help thinking, if this is how we treat one of our most beloved species, what chance have the rest of them got? https://lnkd.in/enXzj6nB

Given the ubiquity of #birds, their pivotal importance to the environment and the vast amount of privately owned lands around the world, #conservation projects involving birds are particularly well-suited for corporations. Our new #WhitePaper sponsored by Vulcan Materials Company features case studies from AriensCo, Argos USA, CEMEX, ExxonMobil, Holcim, IBM, Shell, Summit Materials, Toyota Motor Corporation and WACKER that illustrate how #corporations are supporting local #avian species: https://bit.ly/47QA7IK

🐻❄️ Fossil-fuel drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) could put polar bears at risk of “lethal” oil spills, new research suggests. 🇺🇸 US president Joe Biden has suspended drilling inside the ANWR pending a review but a Republican victory in the next US election would likely see the refuge opened up for oil and gas extraction once again. 🛢️ The research finds that a serious oil spill inside ANWR could expose up to 38 bears to lethal levels of oil and dozens more to harmful levels. 🧊 The risk of exposure to oil spills could be worsened by climate change, which is forcing polar bears to spend greater amounts of time on land in summer as sea ice melts away, the study's lead author tells Carbon Brief. I aspire to have a planet 🌎 with more clean air not less. It doesn’t matter to me who said it, but as a moderate thinker about environmental and clean energy policy (no extremes, sensible economics where all stakeholders including shareholders benefit), I find it troubling that the U.S. would restart drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and stop policies promoting electric vehicles. #sustainability #cleanenergy
