"Transportation capacity increased slightly by 0.6 to 53.2 and has remained above 50.0, avoiding contraction... reflects the high levels of capacity built from 2020 to 2021" One of the insights that stood out to me from this month's edition of our ITS Supply Chain Report. One factor that has contributed to the extended flat market conditions in trucking is the abundance of capacity. Capacity expanded at record levels coming out of the pandemic shutdowns, and has largely remained robust--even with a recessionary trucking market that has lasted over 2 years. Unless a massive disruption event occurs or demand begins to surge, the market is likely to remain relatively stable for some time. Get the most out of the partners you work with, as cost variance among providers is largely marginal. While the freight industry faces ongoing challenges—soft demand, high operational costs, and labor shortages—there's optimism on the horizon. Analysts predict a significant recovery by Q2 2025 as supply chains stabilize, consumer demand increases, and market capacity rebalances. For now, it’s crucial for businesses to focus on efficiency, strengthen partnerships, and prepare for the rebound. The downturn won’t last forever—those who invest in resilience today will be ready to seize opportunities when the market turns.
