Highlights from ILA Berlin - Pioneering Aerospace
1. Prominent Presence of In-Space Manufacturing Companies
Noteworthy is the significant presence of companies focused on in-space manufacturing. Key players include The Exploration Company, Voyager Space, Redwire Space Europe, and Airbus. The pioneering mission by Varda Space Industries seems to have inspired many in the industry, though I remain skeptical about the market size. Bioprinting, in particular, holds promise, yet a commercially viable product appears to be at least a decade away. It is evident that both Europe and the US are recognizing low Earth orbit as a commercial frontier, while space agencies are shifting their focus toward deep space exploration.
2. Funding Shifts and Security Discourse
I liked how one of the speakers said with regret that there will be less money for exploration projects in the future, because in the foreseeable future more money will be spent on war. This shift towards security and technological sovereignty was palpable. The European Union is acutely aware of the strategic importance of space for Europe's future security. The current situation mirrors post-Yugoslav war developments when Europe established its own GNSS. Today, similar efforts are underway with IRIS², despite the realistic expectations that the system will not be operational by 2027 and will likely exceed initial cost estimates. Plus the results of European Parliament elections will likely affect EU’s approach to space programs.
3. Emphasis on Long-Term Space Sustainability
A key event was the signing of the ESA Zero Debris Charter by over forty organizations, underscoring a commitment to sustainable space activities. However, the document itself does not contain the clause of deorbiting of space object within five years, which is already a commitment for European Space Agency - ESA missions. This requirement currently applies mainly when companies seek an FCC license, effectively making the five-year rule a standard since 2022. The Zero Debris Charter remains non-binding, but it reflects a collective aspiration towards a future free from space debris.
4. Support for Light Launch Vehicles
Europe is poised to support the development of light launch vehicles, with anticipated, albeit modest, returns of European launch capabilities this summer with Ariane 6 and LV from Isar Aerospace. This initiative reflects an institutional push aiming to ensure Europe’s assured access to space, however commercial prospects of these LVs remain unclear to me.
5. Local Focus of ILA Berlin
ILA Berlin retains a local flavor, with a limited presence of international space companies. I had anticipated greater participation from French, Italian, and British firms, as well as leading New Space companies from Lithuania (Kongsberg NanoAvionics) and Belgium (Aerospacelab). Nevertheless, it was a pleasure to meet the colleagues from the Berlin office of EnduroSat.
