The Indy 500 is always the headline act of any INDYCAR season, but this year's felt perhaps even more pivotal than usual.
Against the backdrop of the Team Penske push-to-pass scandal, a mixed (at best) reaction to the Thermal Club $1m Challenge, and ongoing media rights renewal negotiations, IndyCar needed "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" to deliver, to remind everyone of the excitement and potential that the series has. It certainly delivered.
Despite a four hour rain delay, the race averaged a total of 5.34m viewers across NBC and Peacock, an eight per cent increase on last year, whilst also becoming the most streamed IndyCar race ever. These figures are very impressive as, ordinarily, weather disruption tends to spell serious trouble for viewership - NASCAR's flagship Daytona 500 earlier this year saw a 27% drop in audience after it was delayed by 24 hours due to rain.
On-track, the action was as exciting as any race in recent memory, with Kyle Larson adding to the intrigue with his attempt at "The Double" - aiming to become only the second driver in history to complete the Indy 500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 in the same day. Whilst ultimately unsuccessful, he was the top-selling driver for merchandise in the Indy field, underlining the appeal and profile that NASCAR drivers carry in US motorsport in particular, and his involvement no doubt contributed to the positive audience numbers.
Whether it be NBC or Fox in control of IndyCar's broadcasting from next year, the series is in a position of real potential. After a shaky start to the season, let's see if the Indy 500 can be the springboard to start harnessing that potential and take it to the next level.
