Working with a Sports 🏀 Chiropractor in High Level Sports As staffs in high level sport grow, there are increased opportunities for different types of practitioners to join and help serve the athletes. Typically, this model will have a physician (external) or an AT/PT/CSCS (internal) serve as the leaders. Adding a Chiropractor to the staff part-time may be the next steps to help with adjustments, manual therapy, rehab, etc. The question becomes, what is a sports chiropractor and how do we find a good one?? Many people do not know that Chiros can complete residencies and fellowships like PTs/Physicians can, just called different names. For example, in Sports Medicine: 1. CCSP (Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner) —Resident Level— 2. DABCSP (Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Sports Physicians) —Fellowship Level— In Rehab: 1. DACRB (Diplomate of the Chiropractic Rehabilitation Board) —Residency + Fellowship— To be clear, if you are looking for a Chiropractor to only perform adjustments, then post-graduate training likely isn’t as important. However, if the goal is: 1. add a practitioner that understands manual therapy, taping, emergency procedures, concussions, etc…then a sports medicine Chiro is the wave. 2. Add a practitioner to assist with the rehab and return to play process at all levels…then a rehab Chiro is the wave. 🔑 As we all know, credentials aren’t everything and this is only one slice of what makes a Sports Chiropractor competent, but hope this helps. One of my passions is to positively change how Chiropractors are viewed and utilized with high level sports. Please reach out if you have screening questions about Sports Med Chiropractors! #athletictraining #athletictherapy #athleticperformance #athleticmedicine #strengthandconditioning #sportsperformance #sportsmedicine #sportschiropractic #basketball #basketballperformance #sportscience

Fix your _____ with this one stretch…. Correct your posture with this one exercise… Load management > load accumulation to increase athlete trainability…. Kitchen versus gym for body composition …. And the list goes on. Black and white thinking is hardly ever justified or accurate. Parroting these sayings as fact and law when clearly exceptions exist in sports performance and medicine is naive at best, or in worse case, pure ignorance by a sports medicine team. Fluid situations require constant critical thinking with actionable interventionism taken by providers or coaches when providing guidance for goal attainment to their patients or athletes, respectively. You can't think the same way as everyone else, do the same things as everyone else, with the same frequency as everyone else — and expect differentiated results. If you're not actively engaged in building a competitive advantage, then you are likely passively engaged in losing a competitive advantage. Consistently building and updating your systems, blueprints, frameworks and processes for rehabbing, reconditioning, and coaching your athletes is a must for professional growth and competitive separation from your peers to occur. Point: be consistent in questioning everyone and everything because complacency kills innovation in human performance. P.S. Are you a coach or clinician who wants to save years of time and money building your professional foundation for your career? Check out the courses below as they are an assemblage of my time in various high-performance settings from within the sports medicine industry, as the perspectives I gathered and present here encompass elements of different learning opportunities I was a part of while working in the professional, private, military, and hospital settings. These perspectives are all very different and unique when compared to one another, but most importantly, tried and tested as they were instrumental in the ACL specific Bridge Program that I developed and oversaw for one of the top rated pediatric orthopedic hospitals in the country. I feel for healthcare professionals. It's not easy reading research - and then having to critically appraise it. It should be easier, just read something and what they report is what it is - but because of questionable research practices in SEM and other areas (Psychology another big one, but they're ahead of SEM by now), one often cannot do that. That's why I really like what these authors did. Risk factors for shoulder injuries in swimmers...! Or wait, maybe not? https://lnkd.in/g9AJ_cxq These authors do a great job at pumping the breaks that "It is not known whether the presented risk factors or causal or noncausal." and shine a good light on where we are and could be. They note the prevalence of shoulder injuries in competitive swimmers seem to be rising, so they wanted to put together a best-evidence synthesis of risk factors, although I do wish they'd use a different name, as they didn't look at risk factors per se. Why? Because to call something a risk factor, you have to show causation and account for confounders. If not, you're not talking about a risk factor. They note the prevalence of shoulder injuries in competitive swimmers seem to be rising, so they wanted to put together a best-evidence synthesis of risk factors, although I do wish they'd use a different name, as they didn't look at risk factors per se. They included 24 studies (2 of which were so poor they dropped, so 22), of which involved 7 cohort, and the rest case-control and cross-sectional, and from what I gathered from looking at the references most studies included were associations or creating predictive models. That being said, a lot of things were not associated, like shoulder ROM, isometric shoulder strength in flexion, extension, IR and ER, etc. At this point that should be news to no one who has heard me talk on and on about that for many years now. Some were associated, like posterior shoulder endurance (prediction, not risk factors [causal]). Again, they do a great job of pumping the brakes, but it could be so much better if there was a collective effort to find risk factors, because I know there are people that read 'X' is a risk factor and will go and act on it without realizing the research they're reading isn't able to say that.

In the bustling arena of youth sports, there's an often overlooked but critical aspect: musculoskeletal health. As children & adolescents increasingly flock to sports activities, the need to safeguard their growing bodies becomes paramount. At the forefront of this concern are musculoskeletal injuries, which stand as the most prevalent issue facing young athletes today. The numbers are sobering, with a significant portion of youth experiencing injuries each year. What's particularly concerning is that their developing musculoskeletal systems are more susceptible to trauma & strain compared to adults. Various factors contribute to this vulnerability. Growth spurts, for instance, can lead to temporary imbalances in muscle strength & flexibility, making young athletes more prone to injuries during this transitional period. Additionally, the maturation process itself introduces variability in physical development among peers, further complicating matters. Specific sports, with their unique demands on the body, also present inherent risks. However, amid these challenges, there's a beacon of hope: chiropractic sports medicine. Armed with a deep understanding of musculoskeletal health & sports-related injuries, board certified chiropractic sports physicians play a pivotal role in keeping young athletes in the game. One of the key advantages of chiropractic sports medicine is the emphasis on conservative care. Instead of relying solely on medications or invasive procedures, we prioritize non-invasive techniques & holistic approaches to treatment. This approach not only promotes healing but also fosters long-term wellness & resilience in young athletes. Through meticulous diagnosis, targeted treatment plans & proactive injury prevention strategies, chiropractic sports medicine helps young athletes & their families navigate the complexities of sports-related injuries. By addressing issues early on & providing comprehensive care, we ensure that young athletes are able to pursue their passions safely & confidently. Swank Chiropractic Sports Medicine in Cary NC.
