The number of drownings is unusually high this year, not only in South Florida but across the nation. The CDC released a report in May revealing that over 4,500 people died due to drowning each year from 2020–2022, 500 more per year compared to 2019. Several factors are behind the recent increase in drownings and near-drownings in Florida. Tourists are back, children aren’t being taught how to swim, rip currents are happening frequently, and lifeguard stations are going unstaffed. With all these factors at play, knowing how to save yourself or a loved one from drowning, and the actions to take in the first few minutes can be critical. Everyone can prevent drowning by following these important tips: 1️⃣ Learn Basic Swimming and Water Safety Skills: Even children who have had swimming lessons still need close and constant supervision when in or around water. 2️⃣ Build Fences Around Pools: Ensure fences fully enclose and separate the pool from the house. Fences should be at least four feet high with self-closing and self-latching gates. 3️⃣ Wear a Life Jacket: Always wear a life jacket while boating, regardless of age or swimming ability. 4️⃣ Avoid Alcohol: Do not drink alcohol before or during swimming, boating, or other water activities. Alcohol impairs judgment, balance, and coordination. Never drink alcohol while supervising children. 5️⃣ Learn CPR Skills: Knowing how to perform CPR could save someone’s life in the critical minutes before paramedics arrive. By taking these precautions, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable time around water for you and your loved ones. Stay safe and vigilant! #watersafety #drowningprevention #safeswimming #lifesavingtips #staysafe #franklkominsky #fklegal

Water Safety Tips for Spring Break: 1.) When in doubt wear bright colors. If you have an inexperienced swimmer, it’s essential to dress them in bright orange, red or pink when going to the pool or lake. Wearing pastels or blue can drastically limit adults seeing a child in distress in a body of water. 2.) Always check the water if a child goes missing. It takes 30 seconds for a child under the age of 4 to drown. That’s enough time to respond to a text message or wash your hands. Checking the water first if a child goes missing can prevent a fatal drowning. 3.) Install self-latching pool gates, door/window and doggy door locks as a way to prevent drownings when you’re outside next week. 4.) Throw don’t go. The second most common drowning that occurs is when an adult goes after a child drowning. The best way to rescue a distressed swimmer is by extending a pool noodle, a leg, or arm. 5.) Designate one sober adult to watch the water when swimming. This person will be responsible for watching the water for distressed swimmers and can easily call 911 if there is a drowning. Heading off to the pool or lake this summer with your furry friend? Check out these water safety tips to ensure your pet has fun while staying safe. ☀️ ☑️ Pick a shallow spot to start and stay close to the water's edge. ☑️ Don’t force them to swim. Throwing a pet in the water who doesn’t want to swim can be traumatic and may prevent them from enjoying the water later on. ☑️ Get in the water with them. When they start paddling with their front paws, lift their hind end so they understand how to float. ☑️ Keep them on a leash at first so they can’t stray too far away from you. 🌡 Also, be sure to stay aware of the temperature! While swimming may cool you and your pet down, hot sand or pavement can injure your pet's paws. If you can't hold the back of your hand to the ground for at least 10 seconds without feeling a burn, it's too hot for your pet to walk on. Remember, Avets is open 24/7 for emergency care. I don't know the details about what these individuals were specifically doing but I think it's fair to say lots of people on vacation may consume more alcohol than they typically do when they have to go to work or school the next day. The recent death of Reilly Strain is one example of how intoxication and being in a body of water --especially a lake or open water--can have tragic results. 1. Please consider not going into the open ocean if you have been enjoying a few libations. 2. Whether you're an experienced swimmer or not, please consider wearing a whistle --especially if the beach is crowded or if you are swimming at dusk or dawn. 3. It's easy to say and hard to do, but please try not to panic and fight against the current if you end up in a rip current situation. 4. Also, if you are used to swimming in saltwater or even a freshwater pool, please don't underestimate how different the buoyancy is in a freshwater lake or blue hole. It's really different and it can be scary if you find yourself in that situation for the first time. #watersafety #ripcurrents #safeswimming https://lnkd.in/gJuc_zMe

🌊 Drowning accidents remain a significant concern worldwide, with several factors contributing to these tragic incidents. Understanding the leading causes of drowning is essential for implementing effective prevention strategies. 🏊♂️ Poor Swimming Skills: One of the primary contributors to drowning accidents is the lack of adequate swimming skills. Enrolling in swimming lessons can greatly reduce this risk. 🛑 No Pool Safety Equipment: The absence or improper use of pool safety equipment, such as fences, gates, and alarms, significantly increases the risk of drowning, especially in residential and recreational settings. 👀 Lack of Supervision: Inadequate supervision, particularly among children, is a major contributing factor to drowning incidents. Constant adult supervision is crucial whenever individuals are in or around water. 🚤 Not Wearing Life Jackets: Failing to wear properly fitted and coast guard-approved life jackets, especially during boating or water sports, increases the risk of drowning. Life jackets provide vital support and buoyancy. 🔍 Despite their effectiveness, distractions, overconfidence, and discomfort may deter individuals from wearing life jackets or practicing water safety measures. Stay safe and remember to prioritize water safety at all times! #DrowningPrevention #WaterSafety #StaySafe 🏊♀️🚣♂️🚤
