October is Prenatal-onset GBS Disease Recognition Month. GBS or group-B strep is a bacteria that some adults carry, and it usually does not cause problems for the mom or the developing baby. However, at the time of birth, the baby can become infected. To help prevent GBS infection, women are tested for GBS late in pregnancy, between weeks 35 and 37. Rhesus disease, also known as Haemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN), occurs during pregnancy when a person with a Rh D negative blood type is exposed to the Rh D positive blood of the fetus. Approximately 17% of Australians who become pregnant require Rh D immunoglobulin injections to prevent Rh disease and ensure the health of their baby. The extraordinary work initiated by Dr Vera Krieger (The Royal Women's Hospital, National Blood Authority, Australia & Australian Red Cross Lifeblood) helped Australia to become the first country to offer free Rh D immunoglobulin to all pregnant Rh D negative people at risk of HDFN. It's crucial that all parents and families know the signs of group B Strep infection. Early diagnosis and treatment saves lives! Late-onset group B Strep infection affects babies aged 7 days - 3 months old. Testing for group B Strep in pregnancy and antibiotics in labour WILL NOT reduce the risk. If you suspect your baby has late-onset group B Strep infection you must URGENTLY contact your midwife or doctor and mention group B Strep. Visit gbss.org.uk for a full list of signs and get in touch if you have any questions. #GBSAM24 #gbsawareness #groupbstrep #lateonsetgroupbstrep #signsandsymptoms

Pregnancy complications severely affect 20% of pregnancies (~25million/year) and can lead to chronic (e.g. cardiometabolic) diseases in women and their children. Genesis Theranostix had ground-breaking discovery on the four distinct disease mechanisms of preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication with death toll of 76,000 women and 500,000 babies every year. We have developed a liquid-biopsy-based preeclampsia screening test, which is 80% accurate for all patients compared to ~50% accuracy of competitor tests. Moreover, our test can also recognize the activated disease mechanisms in very early stages, thus, it is highly predictive, preemptive, and preventive. Our vision is to become the leader in precision medicine in FemTech/preeclampsia diagnostics, enabling the savior of millions of lives and prevention of their chronic diseases. July is Group B Strep Awareness Month! Join us in spreading the word about the importance of screening and prevention for Group B Strep during pregnancy. While most cases of early-onset can be prevented through IV antibiotic intervention during labor and delivery, there are no prevention protocols in place for prenatal-onset or late-onset. That's why knowing and recognizing the signs of invasive GBS disease (iGBS) is so important - they're often your first defense. Early detection and prompt treatment are crucial for improving outcomes. What Is Maternal Sepsis? Maternal sepsis is caused by severe bacterial infections during pregnancy or immediately after childbirth. Common sources of infection include the uterus, urinary tract, or pneumonia. Immunological changes and medical procedures related to pregnancy slightly increase the risk. Symptoms: Symptoms of sepsis (similar to those in the general population): 1) Slurred speech or confusion 2) Extreme shivering or muscle pain 3) Passing no urine in a day 4) Severe breathlessness 5) Skin mottled or discolored Prevention and Support: Good hygiene practices reduce the risk of infection. The flu vaccine is recommended during pregnancy to prevent sepsis from other sources. Recovery after sepsis can be challenging physically and mentally. #MaternalHealth #SepsisAwareness #PregnancyHealth #publichealth #womeneducation #healthymothers

National Oral Health Month September is national Oral Health Month – time to pay extra attention to your dental routine, particularly as two of the world's most common health problems affect the mouth – cavities (dental caries) and gum disease. Gum disease ranks second only to the common cold in terms of prevalence, with an estimated 90% of South Africans experiencing the problem at some point. It really is in your best interest to practice good oral hygiene. Not only does it ensure a beautiful smile, but it is good for your health – gum disease has been linked to coronary heart disease, adverse pregnancy outcomes and diabetes. New research also shows that women with gum disease find it harder to conceive. #MISAONTHEMOVE #MISACARES #MISAFAMILY #PROUDLYMISA
