Many barriers to tackle the breast cancer prevalence remain. Small incremental steps and larger overarching policies to make meaning full gains. Access to screening, diagnosis, timely care, time and access to therapeutic modalities (surgical/medical), risk reduction strategies crossing the barriers of race/ethnicity and SES...
In recent decades, advances in breast cancer have led to a 40% fall in breast cancer deaths in some high-income countries. However, the burden still remains large worldwide. After years of work, we are just weeks away from the launch of our new @TheLancet Commission on #BreastCancer. Join us April 16th for the launch of this Commission, aiming to highlight overlooked aspects of the disease and issue a roadmap for meaningful change. 𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒 𝐓𝐎𝐃𝐀𝐘 A global report on breast cancer, written by experts including those from Peter Mac, has praised the 40% decline in mortality in countries like Australia while warning that many women were still “systematically left behind”. The decline in mortality has occurred in many high-income countries over 30 years but is yet to be seen in most middle and low-income countries due to ongoing late diagnosis and treatment capacity issues. The Lancet Breast Cancer Commission – authored by Peter Mac’s Professor Kelly-Anne Phillips, Professor Prue Francis Francis and Dr Wanda Cui and international colleagues – says this is the world’s most common cancer with 2.3 million new cases in 2020. In the words of Nelson Mandela “freedom cannot be achieved unless the women are emancipated from all forms of oppression “. This was my key takeaway thanks to this powerful session on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly convened by Marleen Temmerman. Starting with reflections on health system barriers and patient navigation by Miriam Mutebi, MD,MSc,FACS to a reminder of the burden of disease, widening disparities especially in low resource settings with the WHO Global Breast Cancer Initiative as a call to action by myself and a focused session on the drivers of disparities and existential gaps in research especially on political and economic determinants. It clearly emerged that the decision to attend care is greatly influenced by a woman’s time. In many families, women are the breadwinners and due to inequities in pay, they often they have to work for longer hours than their male counterparts hence lack time to attend their health needs. Therefore as we expand access to services, women’s empowerment and achievement of equity in this regard needs to be prioritized as these also have an impact on health outcomes. The need for designing breast programs that are context-specific. For example, for early detection and timely diagnosis, embracing technology and use of evidence-based innovative models of care that enable efficiency, saving on time for women and costs to the health system by @Susan Harvey. All in all, it was wonderful to take note of the fact that investments in women’s healthcare pays. I learnt that it is a trillion dollar market that has so far been underfunded, underserved and under researched through the life course. We have opportunity to shift the narrative, integrate private capital and bring everyone on board to drive this agenda. We know what needs to be done. Now its time to walk the talk and take multisectoral action… Dr Norah Akong'o Obudho (MD, MPH, PMD, PgMD) WomenLift Health Women in Global Health sharon Kapambwe Julie S. I am honored to be speaking on Breast Cancer: Too many preventable deaths in LMICs-innovative approaches to improve early diagnosis at the sidelines of the UNGA on 27th September 2024 to advocate for placing breast cancer as a global health priority as we discuss opportunities we could leverage on in achieving the GBCI within countries. There is great need to change the discourse and disrupt the status quo…every minute a mother, a sister, a wife, a friend succumbs and every year an estimated 2.3 million women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Working collaboratively together, we can change this. Register to attend this important event and be part of this journey: https://lnkd.in/dnV_hpNy

Exciting news for #OneChain! 🎉 Our founder Pablo Menendez Bujan and research director Víctor Manuel Díaz Cortés had the privilege of attending the Association Against Cancer's aid award ceremony in Barcelona last Thursday. This event underscored the ongoing commitment to cancer research, and for us, marked a particularly significant milestone: OneChain has been awarded a grant of €450,000 for the development of a new CAR T therapy targeting a rare subtype of leukemia with no therapeutic alternatives. Our endeavor aligns with the Association's goal to boost cancer survival rates to 70% by 2030, highlighting the critical need to bring research outcomes directly to the patients who need them the most. We extend our gratitude to the Association Against Cancer for their generous support and for recognizing the potential of our research. This achievement reinforces our commitment to advancing science and offering new hope to patients facing unprecedented challenges in their treatment. Together, we are making a difference!
