My mantra is "review, review, review" when it comes to pensions / investments and to make changes where appropriate. And I practise what I preach. I left St James's Place a few years ago to join The Openwork Partnership whose wealth proposition offers a far broader range of passive and active funds from some of the world's leading investment companies, with access to the most sophisticated platforms and tax wrappers. In SJP's latest assessment of value report of all 45 funds, 6 of which are not available to UK investors, 13 were deemed to have not delivered value for their investors over the past 5 years. Meanwhile, 36 of the 45 funds were red flagged for performance, 2 for fund charges, 1 for quality of service, 2 for economies of scale and 6 for comparable market rates. In addition, not 1 of the 45 funds received an entirely unblotted report, with a raft of amber flags also attributed to funds for ‘broadly' delivering value. On the domestic side, 30 of the 39 funds available to UK clients failed to deliver value on a performance metric, a rise from 25 in the previous report. Notably, the £9.9bn SJP Global Quality fund failed to deliver value, having already been flagged as a flailing strategy in Bestinvest's most recent "Spot the Dog" report. Also, having rolled out its fresh fund of funds range, Polaris, at the end of 2022, three of the four Polaris strategies were red flagged for their underperformance. This really is unacceptable from a firm whose charges are at the upper end of the spectrum and where they employ many so called "experts" who are very highly paid for their strategic input, all at the expense of their clients. I now firmly believe that good performance starts with low charges and by using a blend of passive and active funds, this can often provide significantly better results over the medium to long term than just picking "star" managers.
