One solution commonly discussed as a partial solution to the healthcare issues in this country is primary care for everyone, regardless of age, race, income, geography, insurance coverage, etc. The Neighborhood Nursing program being piloted in Baltimore is attempting to address the current gaps on that front and shift from treatment to prevention. Today, only 5% of healthcare spending goes towards primary care. While we expect primary care to cost less, more focus on primary care should decrease overall healthcare spending. Aides had sought to quell fears that millions more people would become uninsured when the pandemic-era pause on eligibility checks ended April 1, pledging the Obamacare insurance marketplaces would serve as a lifeline for those losing their health coverage. But, as Amy found, the Affordable Care Act’s exchanges are so far playing a surprisingly small role as a backstop for the roughly 2 million people who have lost their Medicaid coverage because they’re no longer eligible. In a few states, the administration’s prediction of a smooth transition has borne out — but that’s not so in many other parts of the country. So far, roughly 7.7 million have been kicked off the safety net program since the forced hiatus ended. States essentially couldn’t cut people from the program for three years during the pandemic, causing enrollment to spike by 23.3 million people.
