My kids, like many kids, love playing with Lego. I’ve lost count of the number of kits they’ve collected since their respective day 1s 🐣 They spend hours building magnificent structures from soup to nuts, and it always fills me with pride to see them complete a kit. After each build, we often take some time to step back and admire their work. Those moment of admiration don’t tend to last long though. Usually within a few minutes the $thing is torn down and all of the Lego bricks, mini-figures and whatnots are swept in to big barrel 🛢️ of assorted archived Lego components. “The barrel” sits in the cupboard until the next time the kids come to me and say “Dad! I’m sooo bored!”. This is usually when it’s a rainy day ☔️ or they are on school holidays (or on a rainy school holiday day 😱). It’s at this point where the inevitable happens. With tens, maybe even hundreds of thousands of Lego components scattered across the floor, one of the kids shows me a picture of something they saw on TV or whilst playing a video game and asks “Dad, can you help us build this please?”. As a Solutions Architect, turning a pile of discreet Lego bits in to a majestic castle 🏰, Bluey’s house 🏡 or an international space station 🚀 , with minimal (often no) instructions isn’t completely unfamiliar territory for me. In fact, my kids often ask me what I do at work all day. When they do, with our rainy day / school holiday activities in mind, I tell them that what I do at work isn’t all that different from what I do at home. Well, last week I had the pleasure of being able to expand on the “just like when we build lego” explanation of my job. I got to bring my daughter to my office for the day. Not only did this aspiring young engineer get to take part in a holiday code camp and build a game. But she also got to see where I work and meet some of the AWSome people I work with. Work hard, have fun … make memories.
