Technology has come a long way over the last 50 years. Not only has consumer tech improved, but so has industrial technology such as that seen in hoses. If you thought there wasn’t anything special about hose and fittings, think again! Thermoplastic hose is a relatively new technology which improves on many factors seen in thermoset hoses. So, lets talk about a few of those! First, what are thermoplastics? These polymers are unique because they can be molded to shape by heat, then set in that shape as they cool. They can be reheated and remolded with little to no integrity lost. These differ from thermoset plastics in that thermoset’s cannot be reheated after they are initially hardened. Thermoplastics allow for longer continuous hose lengths to be made. This is because thermoplastic hose is cured on a line with a self-supporting core tube, no mandrel required. Since there’s no mandrel used in the curing process, a smaller inside diameter (ID) can be achieved. Thermoplastics are stronger than thermosets. This allows for less material to be used to achieve the same strength as thermosets, resulting in a smaller outside diameter (OD). This also results in a reduced weight, making it easier to handle. Thermoplastics have a greater abrasion resistance over thermoset hoses. This is due to the polymers used, usually polyurethane, which reduce friction substantially. In fact, most thermoset hoses use bits of polyurethane to improve the abrasion resistance of those hoses. ROLLING MILL COOLANT FILTRATION 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 The primary piece of machinery used in the rolling of metal blanks during the manufacturing of steel is the rolling mill. The mill cooling system removes secondary iron oxide from the surface of the rolled pieces during this process to prevent it from embedding in the work piece surface, which would lower the quality of the rolled pieces and harm the machinery. The mill cooling system also lubricates the surface of the rolled pieces and removes the heat generated by friction and deformation in the mechanical forming process of the rolled pieces. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 To cut expenses, several manufacturers recycle and reuse coolants. Large amounts of contaminants, including dust and iron oxide that has developed on the surface of the rolled pieces, are present in the recycled coolant. These contaminants, when employed again, are simple to block the nozzles, which raises the expense of equipment maintenance. 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 To accomplish coolant cycle usage, these coolants must be filtered before being reused.
