Psst, here’s some fresh intel ... We at Kinfolk Tech are gearing up for our first round of hiring together as a team, with me at the helm. If you know me, you’ll know I am slightly obsessed about building a transparent workplace and an equally open process for incoming candidates and soon-to-be teammates. It started with redrafting our core values. I was consumed by the origin story: a social movement about questioning the status quo. This element of activism led me to reflect on how we can embody this core value not just in our products, but in our entire organizational culture. So we’ve recently crystallized a redesign of our core values: redefining how we win together and how we work together. This finish product wasn't about crafting catchy phrases; it was about creating a framework that truly reflects the spirit of Kinfolk Tech and guides every decision we make. ⏭️ What’s Next for Hank? Like many tech leaders and ICs, I’m looking for my next big move. I’ve taken the summer to really reflect on my passion and what I could do next. Sadly, I’ve left behind some great colleagues, who taught me so much. Good thing is, I am holding onto one person, who’s been so helpful during the transition: Andrew Bosworth , Meta’s CTO (‘Boz”). Thankfully, due to his kindness, I can bounce ideas off of him. 😊 Boz best exemplifies Meta‘s culture: develop an informed opinion, have a bias towards action, and then iterate. Iterate. My time at Dropbox and then Meta has been inspirational, and rewarding. Let me share three (3) key principles re: best in class engineering and lean data infrastructure that I’ve learned: 1️⃣ #DataModernization is a key prerequisite to effective #ML initiatives. 🔹 A well thought out enterprise data #architecture program can speed ML timelines from years to months! 2️⃣ #DeveloperEffectiveness is a primary ingredient to high quality engineering and faster build/release velocity. 3️⃣ #EngineeringLeaders must be in the technical weeds *and visionary… at the same time! 🔹#CTOs/#CIOs/VPs I’ve spoken with wish the quality and speed of engineering efforts to be improved… and most of them see this type of leadership transformation as a driver. ⏭️ Ok, So What’s Next? Meta, then Apple, and now..... Sergey Brin!? GOOGLE!? AGAIN!? Yes, yes, yes. A few of us remember googles felt-fabric style headset from many years back. It was actually quite comfortable, I liked it. Google Daydream was great imho. Then just like that, it vanished. They squashed the product just as fast as they squashed Google Glass. BUT IN A RECENT INTERVIEW JUST THIS WEEK, Sergey Brin, Googles original founder, said some really interesting things...... + Brin said if he could do Google Glass over again he'd have treated it as a prototype + He said despite the mistakes, he's in agreement with the idea that it needs to be light weight + When the CNBC reporter asked him about Apple Vision Pro, Brin said "very impressive." It's pretty cool to see Brin talking like this in 2024, when it's been over 11 years since Google Glass. We're back! - - P.S.
