SPI recently launched the first Economic Impact Study of the film incentive supporting international productions filming in Spain. Based on project data collected by SPI between 2019 to 2022, incentivised international film and television production generated an estimated minimum of €1,795 million in GVA contributions to Spain’s economy. The overall GVA RoI was 9.0, meaning that for every €1 invested through the programme, the benefit to the Spanish economy was €9 in terms of additional economic value from direct, indirect, and induced effects. I provide African film industry intelligence and strategic consultation, with news, project tracking, data, expert insights, and analysis on various aspects of the film sector across African countries.
Box Office Analysis: African/Diaspora Films on the International Stage and Lessons from PARASITE Last week, I analyzed the global box office performance of a selection of 10 African and diaspora films released between 2000 and early 2020 (before the COVID-19 pandemic disruption), focusing on their financial success in various markets and the factors affecting their performance. I made key observations of several trends, some should be obvious; others not so much: the majority of the films had limited theatrical releases beyond film festivals, primarily in art house circuits; a noticeable difference in performance between the USA and international markets; European markets, especially France, were more receptive to African films; language and cultural specificity meant challenges in reaching broader markets; recognition at film festivals was crucial for initial exposure, even as digital distribution platforms emerge; a few outlying, unique scenarios; and much more. Additionally, the analyses included comparisons to the breakout success of the South Korean film "Parasite," to draw contextualized lessons for the African filmmaking landscape. Film Entrepreneur | Film & TV Producer | Virtual Production Producer | Sharing my knowledge for indie filmmakers to get money to make their movies, grow their audience, and earn an income.
Incredibly insightful thoughts about the current situation in the industry and the changes that need to be made. Take some time to read the latest Nostradamus report. If you follow Ted Hope’s newsletter, you’ll enjoy the insight he adds into this report. Film i Vast’s Tomas Eskilsson has enlightening thoughts on the current film funding models and the theatrical ecosystem. I enjoyed Robert Franke insight on the creator industry within the film/tv industry. Joanna Szymanska comments on choosing collaborators with smaller budgets because of their qualities as human beings as opposed someone not so friendly who gives you money. Hannah Reifgerst is spot on with her analogy of the opera for adults to the cinemas for teenagers. For many it’s only affordable for a once a year type of experience. There is so much more wisdom and insights to ponder in the report from: Angela Chan Fatima Djoumer Guillaume Esmiol TABITHA JACKSON Kjersti Mo Gaia Tridente I would have pulled quotes from everyone, but then I would have just copy & pasted the whole report on this post.
The anticipated 11th Nostradamus Report is here! This year's report is titled Paradox of Hope, written by industry analyst Johanna Koljonen. Paradox of Hope explores the striking contradictions shaping trends in the audiovisual sector, where experiences of decline and growth, threat and opportunity, fear and hope coexist. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/dpcTveru The report was presented at Marché du Film - Festival de Cannes. The report analyzes and forecasts the near future of the faster-than-ever evolving audiovisual industries through research, and interviews with industry experts. My goal is to get a second (or more) license for high-end African films (we usually just get an African License that goes into the Finance Plan, limiting our sustainability). This news from Thailand may look small, but it builds on the "foreign-language content" breakouts like "Squid Games" and Scandi-Noir For anyone in my network who thinks they have an audience for good African films - I'm connected and keen for you to see what Africa offers. Thanks Thailand, for once again showing us that people of other cultures are really just like "Us" but much more interesting. https://lnkd.in/dPB3tuiX
