As a new recruiting season kicks off, odds are, you may have questions for recruiters and hiring teams. This time can be tricky to navigate!
Recruiters get many messages, and with such limited time, it can be hard to get to all of them. I wanted to share some questions I have received in the past, and how I would have preferred to receive them to save time/help the job seeker more efficiently.
We want to help - but you can help us help you!
❔Original question: "Can you tell me about this position?"
❌ Why it doesn't work: What questions do you have about the role? Is there something specific you're looking to understand? There's a lot we can share, but more likely than not, not all of it is relevant to what you're acting looking to know.
✔️ Better question: "I noticed in the job description X skills is required. Can you tell me what type of work in this skill is beneficial?"
❔Original question: "Here is my resume. What roles am I a fit for?"
❌ Why it doesn't work: Be clear and intentional about what you want. We can 100% help you find a direction, but give us some information about general areas of interest. Help us help you, vs. using your time to tell you about areas that you may not be interested in.
✔️ Better question: "Here is my resume. I am interested in software development -- can you tell me a little bit about the types of software roles your company offers?"
❔Original question: "Here is my resume. Will you refer me to this role?"
❌ Why it doesn't work: If you haven't built a connection, asking for a referral can feel very transactional. Recruiters speak with many candidates, so a referral means that we are personally vouching for someone. Instead, ask if there's anything else YOU can do. If you're a right fit for a role, we may not always tell you, but we likely are going to send your information to our hiring teams.
✔️ Better question: "Here is my resume. I have applied to X role and would appreciate any insight if there's anything I can do to improve my candidacy."
By taking the time to be intentional in your messaging and asking the questions you truly cannot find an answer to, you improve your chances of getting the response you need. Specificity will only help you in your recruiting efforts! Help us help you ☀️
