Intersnack, a leading European snack manufacturer, has made a pivotal move by partnering with the Cambodian Agricultural Cooperative Corporation (CACC) to source dried cashew products, spotlighting Cambodia's cashew industry on a global scale. This collaboration, which also involves Agricultural Cooperatives from Preah Vihear Province, aims to amplify the international profile of Cambodian cashews. The agreement was solidified with key figures like CACC's Kan Kunthy and Intersnack's Wim Schipper, alongside representatives from Preah Vihear's cooperatives. This strategic partnership is set to benefit nearly 2,000 smallholder farmers by providing a stable market for their produce and propelling Cambodian cashews onto the global stage. Additionally, a contract farming agreement promises to back the production of 1,700 tonnes of cashews, supporting cooperatives across Preah Vihear. Despite a dip in cashew exports last year, initiatives like these, backed by the National Policy on Cashew Nuts, forecast a promising future for Cambodia's agricultural sector and its global standing, particularly in the cashew market. This initiative is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH with co-financing from the European Union. The project focuses on training small-scale farmers in environmentally sustainable Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) that enhance climate resilience. MOAP-NW adopts a value chain approach, targeting high-value crops and aiding business-oriented smallholder producers to meet market demands in quality and quantity. By aligning with public extension structures and private sector initiatives, we promote agriculture as a business opportunity that opens markets for both producers and processors The specific area of focus of the project is chili pepper production. Recognizing chili pepper's high profit potential, widespread demand, and robust export market, we have intensified #GAP training in this sector. The activities include nursery establishment and management, transplanting, fertilization, pruning, pest and disease management, and harvest and postharvest handling. The efforts have been fruitful, leading us to expand our support to more smallholder farmers with GAP training and hands-on practical exercises. So far, some 8 demonstration plots have been established in different villages and some 250 farmers trained. Vietnam's agriculture is witnessing a significant shift as local farmers increasingly turn to the more lucrative durian crop, leading to a steep $2.3 billion in cashew import costs this year. Once the world's leading exporter of cashew kernels, Vietnam is now grappling with declining domestic cashew production as farmers prioritize higher earnings from durian. This trend has sparked concern among industry stakeholders, with low-quality imported cashews threatening the reputation of local brands. Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan recently visited Bu Dang in Binh Phuoc, where he observed farmers' clear preference for durian over cashew due to its profitability. In response, the Ministry is exploring innovative solutions to make cashew cultivation more viable, such as intercropping with red reishi mushrooms and strengthening the connection between cashew growers and processors through programs like OCOP. These efforts aim to preserve Vietnam's position as a global cashew leader while ensuring the economic stability of rural areas traditionally dependent on cashew farming. They planted fish and rice on the land in Indonesia.. Check the picture Rice crop requires large amounts of water; Therefore, farmers in Indonesia devised a way to benefit from this water. They brought fish and released them in large numbers into the water in which rice was grown, and they gained three benefits: 🌾Fish eat insects, algae, and harmful pests that collect on the soil, and fish feed on plant branches at the same time. 🌾The second benefit is benefiting from fish waste for soil fertility. The third benefit is that the fish itself grows and increases in reasonable quantities (as food for farmers or trade). This movement was known as the "rice/fish culture". After implementing this plan, land production increased by about 20% above the normal limit, in addition to the huge quantities of fish. #Sustainability #Agriculture #Foodsecurity

#Agrilink2024’s theme, “The Best of Philippine Agri to the World,” focuses on the country’s agriculture-based exports and underscores the best practices that make them globally competitive. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), for instance, reported that the Philippines is the fourth largest global exporter of seaweeds, from which carrageenan is derived. In 2022, the Philippine seaweed industry generated US$350 million in exports. Leading Philippine exports like coconut, banana, pineapple, tuna, seaweed illustrate that with an efficient value and marketing chains, Philippine crops can attain market leadership. This encompasses innovations in processing that add value to raw agricultural products, maximizing the utilization of the total crop by transforming them into value-added products. Additionally, a streamlined value chain ensures that regulatory compliance and quality standards are met consistently, which is essential for maintaining market access and fostering the trust of international consumers. AgriLink FoodLink AquaLink 2024 is slated from October 3 to 5 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City. The triple exhibit will showcase the latest #FarmMechanization technologies, live animal and plant displays, unique and innovative food products, and other innovations that can help improve the profitability and sustainability of Philippine #agriculture, food, #aquaculture, #agribusiness. Episode 46 of 90: Fight against hunger and food insecurity: Postharvest management vs Increasing Crop production. Hunger and food insecurity are global challenges that strongly affect developing countries especially #Africa. If you are trying to consider either Postharvest management or Crop production, this episode is for you. Post-harvest losses refer to the loss of crops after they have been harvested due to factors such as improper #storage, transportation, and processing. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), post-harvest losses account for up to 40% of the food produced in developing countries. Reducing these losses through improved infrastructure, training, and technology can significantly increase food availability and accessibility. On the other hand, increasing crop production involves enhancing agricultural productivity through methods such as improved seed varieties, irrigation systems, and sustainable farming practices. This approach aims to boost the overall supply of food, making it more readily available and potentially more affordable for those experiencing hunger and food insecurity. Both strategies have their merits and challenges. Handling post-harvest losses can be a more immediate solution, as it focuses on preserving the food that is already being produced. However, it may not be sufficient in the long run if the underlying issue of low crop yields persists. Increasing crop production, while potentially more challenging to implement, could provide a more sustainable solution by increasing the overall food supply. However, it may require significant investments in infrastructure, technology, and training for farmers, which can be a barrier in resource-constrained developing countries. Ultimately, a comprehensive approach that combines both strategies may be necessary to effectively address hunger and food insecurity in developing countries. By reducing #postharvest losses and increasing crop production simultaneously, these countries can work towards achieving food security and ensuring that their populations have access to sufficient, nutritious, and affordable food. Graduate member of NIOB || Software Developer in Training || Fish Farmer and Entrepreneur. Seeking opportunities in Construction Project Management and Catfish farming consulting
The Current Price of Catfish Feed in Nigeria and It's Economic Impact: A Glimpse of Hope The Impact on Catfish Farmers and the Economy; The increase in feed prices has placed a heavy burden on catfish farmers, particularly small-scale operators who form the backbone of the industry. Higher feed costs mean reduced profit margins, making it difficult for farmers to sustain their businesses. Some have been forced to reduce their stock or even shut down operations, leading to potential job losses and decreased fish production. This scenario affects the broader Nigerian economy in several ways: Food Security: Reduced catfish production threatens food security, as catfish is a primary protein source for many Nigerians. Employment: The aquaculture sector employs thousands, and any downturn could lead to significant job losses. Inflation: Higher fish prices contribute to overall food inflation, putting more pressure on consumers. A Glimpse of Hope: Resilience and Innovation Despite these challenges, there is a silver lining. The resilience and ingenuity of Nigerian catfish farmers and entrepreneurs provide hope for overcoming these economic hurdles. Local Feed Production: Efforts are underway to boost local production of catfish feed. By sourcing raw materials locally, producers can reduce dependence on imports and stabilize prices. Innovative Practices: Farmers are adopting innovative farming practices to reduce feed waste and improve efficiency. Techniques such as integrated farming systems and the use of alternative feed ingredients show promise in mitigating costs. Government Support: The Nigerian government has recognized the importance of the agricultural sector and is providing support through grants, subsidies, and favorable policies to help farmers cope with rising costs. Conclusion: Scaling Through Together The challenges posed by rising catfish feed prices and economic instability are significant. However, the resilience of Nigerian farmers, coupled with innovative practices and supportive policies, offers a path forward. By focusing on local production, efficiency, and community support, the Nigerian catfish farming industry can not only survive but thrive. Together, we will scale through these tough times, ensuring a stable and prosperous future for catfish farming in Nigeria. #catfish #catfishfarming #catfishfarminginnigeria
