Menlo Park Patents ®’s Post

This week, as we gear up to celebrate Independence Day, we thought it best to honor some of America's top innovations! On July 31, 1790, the first U.S. patent was granted to Samuel Hopkins for a process to manufacture potash, an ingredient used in fertilizer. President George Washington signed this historic patent. Hopkins initiated the nation’s first patent licensing program shortly after receiving the patent. His approach included three distinct elements: publicly discussing his new method, publishing a pamphlet titled “An Address to the Manufacturers of Pot and Pearl Ash,” and offering license terms. These terms included an initial payment of $50 (or a half ton of potash in casks) and annual payments of $50 starting after three years until either $200 or two tons of potash had been paid. Innovation is the backbone of America. We've made it easy to protect that innovation.
