Mark, I completely agree with you. The industry's strength lies in its collective efforts, and in our case, scaffolding benefits greatly from collaboration and knowledge-sharing. As we celebrate Scaffolders Day, it's a timely reminder of the importance of addressing the industry's challenges, particularly when it comes to recruiting and retaining the next generation of scaffolders. We need to reimagine what it means to work in scaffolding, making it an appealing career choice for young people in the 21st century. To achieve this, we must develop and implement real strategies that showcase the opportunities and benefits of working in our sector. This could involve rebranding scaffolding as a career that values safety, technical expertise, and problem-solving skills. It's crucial that we highlight thr variety of roles available within scaffolding, from design to site management, and the opportunities for career progression. We also need to invest in education and training programs that cater to the needs of the modern workforce. This could include apprenticeships, online courses, and industry-led initiatives that provide skills development and certification. Furthermore, it's essential that we work together as an industry to address the stigma associated with scaffolding as a career choice. We can do this by promoting positive narratives about the profession and showcasing the achievements and contributions of scaffolders on social media and other platforms. To achieve these goals, I'd like to propose that we establish a taskforce comprising industry stakeholders, educators, and government representatives to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for recruiting and retaining the next generation of scaffolders. Mark, I would be more than happy to help drive this initiative forward and explore ways to make scaffolding an attractive career choice for young people. NASC - National Access and Scaffolding Confederation and Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme (CISRS) to appoint new head of training and education https://lnkd.in/dTAifNy2

I often comment on the posts of others but rarely post myself, so I am going to have a go… Recently the NASC - National Access and Scaffolding Confederation have signed agreements with SARNZ- Scaffolding, Access & Rigging NZ Inc. and SCEA (Scaffolding and Construction Equipment Association of Japan). I believe this maybe an agreement to work collaboratively to improve scaffolding methods, but need to do a bit more research to be sure. So I pose a question… Does this have the potential for the creation of an international Scaffolders ticket. If minimum requirements/standards and best practices are developed; to coincide with a higher level of training requirements, surely this would be worth exploring.

Price work in scaffolding. Why is it still “a thing”? Virtus Access did a fair amount of price jobs, but we still kept a certain level of consistent neatness, whilst trying to be as safe as possible. That affected (as a Scaffold Labour Only) our profit. That affected how much money I used to take from the end of the job. I was ok with that. I wanted to build a reputation of quality work, over money - I was hoping that would come later, lol. I was never really much of a “price work scaff” anyway… too fussy. 😂 But I’ve never subscribed to the notion that you can be “fast and neat, whilst also being safe” - you simply can’t, and for the most part something has to be sacrificed if there is a monetary incentive. Safety? Quality? Or both. It’s human nature to cut corners to earn a bit more (especially living week to week, as most scaffolders do). Steve Fearnehough I have replied here, I hope you don’t mind. To keep Jack Bond CEng MICE post separated from a great discussion. I agree with you. I would rather grow organically than risk taking on scaffolders, especially when the card the carry doesn’t make the skill set. As you know the amount of investment in training a scaffolder to high level costs a fortune, only to be tempted by another firm for an extra £40 a week the loyalty is not there, then the other companies don’t bother with all the safety and just get on with it. However like all firms, at time to time we have all needed extra hands 🙌 and it will always be that way. My problem was that not all carded scaffolders are the same, and advanced scaffolders with 8 years experience on house building and commercial properties, is completely different to a scaffolders from petro chemical, offshore and bridges with the same amount of experience. Not all contractors in the NASC - National Access and Scaffolding Confederation are the same, the badge doesn’t mean your capable it means you are compliant. Who audits the auditor? The companies skill set is flawed by the skill set of the scaffolders they employ or the team of scaffolders have more skill than the companies capabilities. It’s crazy to think a career path can operate this way. Having spent time with lots of scaffolders and scaffolding contractors in my career in this country and from companies from around the world through conversations on here and events like ScaffChamp | BSA - Baltic Scaffolders Association I believe there is a massive career hole that needs filling, I believe we can all play apart in to get closer to a global community of scaffolders and recognised training with a better career path, all roles are vital in a scaffolding, so why loose credibility half way up the ladder? “Together As One” #scaffolders #scaffolding #scaffold #scaffoldingservices #scaffoldingdesign

IMPACT WRENCHES! Impact wrenches have become increasingly popular among scaffolders for the erection and dismantling of scaffolding. Let’s delve into the safety considerations and recommendations: NASC Position on Impact Wrenches: The National Access and Scaffolding Confederation (NASC) conducted rigorous tests on impact wrenches, comparing them to traditional scaffold spanners. The results indicated no concerns or adverse effects on couplers when using impact wrenches1. Consequently, the NASC deems the use of impact wrenches for scaffolding purposes acceptable. However, there are important recommendations to consider before using impact wrenches. Key Recommendations: Torque Settings: The recommended force to tighten a fitting is 50 N/mtr (as stated in EN 74). Most wrenches have torque settings exceeding this figure. However, actual torque achieved during testing may differ from manufacturer-published settings. Employers should verify that the impact wrench consistently applies the correct torque to scaffold fittings. Training and Familiarization: Prior to using an impact wrench on-site, employees should undergo suitable training and familiarization. Correct usage is crucial to prevent accidents. Risk Assessment: Employers must conduct an adequate risk assessment. Consider factors such as noise, hand/arm vibration, and overall safety protocols. HAVS is not a real issue, hearing is. Battery Life Monitoring: For battery-powered impact wrenches, monitor battery life to ensure uninterrupted operation. Regular Toolbox Talks: Employers should periodically refresh operatives with company policies and rules for safe impact wrench use. Benefits and Awareness: Impact wrenches offer benefits, but users must be aware of potential concerns. Note that the NASC’s recommendation applies to drop-forged scaffold fittings, not pressed-type fittings2. This in an issue for sleeves!
