I heard some wild ideas about creating standardization in designs, like making all the windows the same size or making room sizes to fit the module size of plasterboard. While in theory that sounds great, practically it doesn’t make a great solution. We don’t have to choose between standardised and bespoke design. We can find the common ground on how to use standardised systems and products that offer benefits of time, cost and quality and we can create site specific, project specific designs that work for you and your situation. As we speed towards a new year, it’s true that for this year the greatest spaces were built on marginal gains. In architecture and interior design, the devil is always in the detail. It’s not the grand gesture but the 1% improvement that makes a space unforgettable—the slightly softer curve, the precision of light falling where it should, the finish that whispers quality without shouting for attention. These are the choices that turn a project into a legacy. At RIVERMEADE, we see this pursuit of incremental excellence as a shared value with the design community. Over decades, we’ve witnessed how a commitment to being just a little better—on every project, with every material, and in every collaboration—elevates work from good to great. It’s a craft, honed one decision at a time. Success in design isn’t about chasing trends or making noise—it’s about a steady focus on refining what works. If we all improved our processes by just 1% in 2024, imagine the extraordinary spaces we could shape together. As you plan for the year ahead, what’s your 1% focus? Let’s discuss how we can collaborate to make it happen. #1% #better #business #better #spaces

Where Does the Expression "Less is More" Come From? 🌿 The phrase "Less is More" is often cited in the world of design and architecture, but its origins are more complex than one might think. Commonly attributed to architect Mies van der Rohe, this maxim was actually introduced by Peter Behrens, one of the first industrial designers. 🔍 The Beginnings of "Less is More" Mies van der Rohe popularized this phrase while working on the AEG Turbine Factory in Berlin between 1907 and 1910. Describing his work, he illustrated the idea that essence can emerge from an uncluttered and functional design. 💡 A Design Philosophy For Mies, "Less is More" represented an approach aimed at simplifying forms and creating a harmonious integration between art and technique. This philosophy lies at the heart of minimalism, which emphasizes simplicity and clarity over clutter. ✨ A Lasting Impact Today, "Less is More" influences not only architecture but also interior design, graphic design, and even our way of life. By focusing on the essentials, we can create calmer, more functional spaces while embracing a lifestyle that values relationships and experiences over material accumulation. How do you integrate the principle of "Less is More" into your work? #LessIsMore #Minimalism #DesignPhilosophy #FurnitureDesign #Simplicity
