Great insights Devon Henry! Here are a few that has helped me: -Health and Wellness: It’s crucial to be aware of how board responsibilities may impact your personal health and wellness journey. Serving on a board should complement, not compromise, your wellbeing. -Balancing Commitments: Assess the board’s active periods and compare them with the busy seasons in your full-time role. It’s important to ensure that these do not conflict, allowing you to be fully present and effective in both capacities. -Technological Support: In today’s digital age, inquire about the technology and tools the board uses. Efficient technology can enhance your ability to contribute effectively and manage responsibilities alongside your other commitments. -Organizational Culture and Communication: Understanding the culture and communication dynamics of the board and its members is essential. This knowledge can help you integrate more smoothly and contribute more meaningfully.
I've had so many colleagues share with me their desire to serve on a board. I typically share with them that there is a lot that goes into being an impactful board member. You would never believe how much time I spend preparing for a board meeting. Service to a board, whether it be a non profit, for profit or corporate board, all require a high level of preparation. I am fortunate to serve on compensated boards and non compensated boards and they both require the same level of preparation and engagement. I ask the hard questions. The only way you are going to add value is to understand where the pressure points reside. Taking it a step further, if you are to be impactful, you must further understand the root of the pressure points. I am passionate about the mission of every single board I serve on and it shows up through my engagement and ultimately my impact. When thinking about board service, I recommend the following. 1. Be sure the mission of the organization aligns with your passion! 2. Understand the time commitment! (Very important) 3. Understand fiduciary requirements and giving requirements! (stated or suggested) 4. Ask questions about the financial solvency of the organization. A financially stressed organization can become a stressor on its board members. At least have an idea of what you are walking into. 5. If you can sneak a peak at their by laws, understanding the governance of the organization can prove to be important. What else should be added to the list?
