“How do you find an authentic style while living the busy working-mom-exec life?” More than once, I’ve found myself looking around at others for cues about what to wear as a business owner and mom. I’ve found myself tempted to just follow the latest athleisure trend to fit in at soccer games, or wear the colorful sheath dress for a speaking engagement. This approach to style spoke little to my aspirations, and instead to playing it safe and going the easy route. It was in these moments when temptation to “follow suit” was highest that I realized how crucial it is align your insides with your outsides, especially as a leader. My passion for personal styling is deeply rooted in being true to myself and to “color outside the lines” - as my mom used to tell me - no matter what others are doing. That means, no matter if I’m in mom or work mode, I will always honor myself because that’s how I know I will feel most empowered, energized and confident. In my styling process, it’s important that I focus on understanding each client’s unique story and challenges and quirks that only they can claim. (I’ve been told this is my zone of genius!) This is the foundational work that happens before we ever step foot in a (virtual) store, and what makes their wardrobe feel deeply personal and relatable to their professional aspirations. Old belief: “Style is about fitting in and being appropriate.” New belief: “Style is about standing out, expressing who I am and thus, amplifying my impact.” This shift from sameness to authenticity goes against everything we’ve been taught, but is where the magic happens if you want to experience true satisfaction and success. Because I work to discover each client’s uniqueness and aspirations, they gain a wardrobe that makes them feel liberated and unstoppable. We are not as bad as we think we are. The same face can tell a dozen different stories, depending on who's looking at it. Imagine standing in front of a mirror, detailing every feature you believe to be flawed. Now picture a stranger observing you, seeing not flaws, but character, strength, and beauty. This was the essence of Dove's "Real Beauty Sketches." Participants described themselves to an FBI-trained sketch artist with their backs turned, hidden from view. Then, a stranger described the same person. The two sketches starkly contrasted: the self-described portraits were harsh, unforgiving; the stranger-described ones were flattering, kind. It's a profound lesson in perspectives. If you feel trapped by your self-image, change your viewpoint. Swap your mirror for the eyes of a stranger. Exchange your critical inner voice for words of kindness from someone who sees you differently. Much like changing habits to break routine and see life afresh—workout in the morning instead of evening, swap Bob Dylan for Chet Baker, or replace your coffee ritual with a dreamy, caffeine-free start. The experiment isn't just about shifting habits but transforming how we see ourselves, proving we are more beautiful than we think.
