Having worked 'both sides of the aisle' (faculty, administration), the first time I read through these findings, I read in hope of finding new ideas for creating a Better We on our campuses. While I didn't discover any then, the second time I read through these data after finishing two post postmortems about recent IHE closures, I was struck all the more by some of the perceptual discrepancies highlighted in this graphic--'Clear communication,' 'Budget transparency,' and 'Willingness to embrace change.' The leading factors contributing to those closures, as cited in those postmortems, aligned perfectly, which won't be a surprise to many. Yet what are we--you--doing to effect a Better We at your institution or in your work with higher-ed agencies? I hope you'll share here how you're focused on not just 'saving' higher ed but making it 21st Century relevant and purposeful. I'll post later--and would love to hear from you in the meanwhile.

How do public servants experience #meaningless #work and what are the broader implications their experiences had on the rest of their lives? Christopher Belanger, Samia Chreim & Silvia Bonaccio from Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa surface and explore the harms inflicted on participants through their experiences with meaningless work and suggest that these harms may have been made worse by structural features of public-sector setting. Faculty want clear communication and budget transparency from administrators. And what administrators want from faculty is a willingness to embrace change. Sean Gallagher, Ed.D. and I look for the common ground in "Resilient Institutions and Shared Governance," our summary of a survey undertaken by Huron in collaboration with the American Council on Education (ACE) and The Chronicle of Higher Education. https://bit.ly/4dX1C81 #TeamHuron

Recommend reading the thoughtfully published piece on shared governance in higher education. By acknowledging differences of opinion, the hope is that administrative and academic leaders can forge a path forward for institutional success.
Fact: Faculty and administrators are concerned about many of the same issues — but differ on how to solve them. Explore the findings of a new survey undertaken by Huron in collaboration with the American Council on Education (ACE) and The Chronicle of Higher Education and ways the two groups can set aside their differences to pursue joint success. https://bit.ly/4dX1C81 #TeamHuron

Read Rob Wilson, Max French, Hannah Hesselgreaves, Toby Lowe and Mark Smith from Northumbria University on how New Public Management’s (NPM) legacy of transactionalism has denatured waves of public service reforms, making them unfit for contemporary governance. After comparing academic and practitioner perspectives on public service reform, the authors present a relational public service agenda which involves investing in infrastructure, focusing on appropriate scaling of change, balancing specialism and generalism in public service roles and functions, and pursuing improvement through engaged research endeavours. This shift requires new thinking, tools and research in terms of measurement, learning and evaluation practice in public service. Academics must play a much more active role in this movement than they did during the NPM era—not merely describing and classifying change, but actively and directly shaping a future-focused prospective public service reform agenda.
