In my previous post I was talking about MVCC(Multi-Version Concurrency Control ),today I will dissect it with an illustration and talk about the pros and cons of it. Let's walk through a simple example to illustrate how MVCC works: 1. Suppose we have a data item X with an initial value of 100. 2. Transaction T1 starts and reads X. It sees the value 100. 3. Transaction T2 starts after T1 and writes a new value 200 to X. A new version of X with the value 200 and now T2's timestamp is created. 4. If T1 reads X again, it still sees the value 100 because it reads the version that was committed before T1 started. 5. T2 commits its changes. 6. Transaction T3 starts after T2 commits. If T3 reads X, it sees the value 200, the latest committed version. Advantages of MVCC: 1. Read operations do not block write operations and vice versa. This leads to higher concurrency and better performance. 2. Transactions get a consistent view of the database as of the time they started, even if other transactions are concurrently updating the data. 3.Since MVCC does not use locks, the risk of deadlocks is significantly reduced. Disadvantages of MVCC: 1. Maintaining multiple versions of data items requires additional storage. 2. The implementation of MVCC is more complex compared to simpler concurrency control methods like locking. #backenDeveloper #systemDesign #MVCC
