Coca-Cola Launches Innovative "Label-Less" Packaging for Sprite Bottles in the UK In a groundbreaking move to enhance sustainability and simplify the recycling process, Coca-Cola has initiated its first UK trial of "label-less" packaging for Sprite and Sprite Zero 500ml rPET bottles. The innovative approach, set to run from January to March 2024, involves removing traditional labels from the iconic green bottles, introducing a unique design aimed at minimizing packaging materials and facilitating recycling. The trial will be conducted in eight Tesco Express stores located in Brighton and Hove, Bristol, London, and Manchester, offering customers the opportunity to experience this environmentally friendly packaging solution firsthand. As part of this initiative, the familiar labels on the 500ml Sprite and Sprite Zero bottles will be replaced by an embossed logo prominently displayed on the front of the packaging. Additionally, crucial product information will be laser-engraved on the rear of the bottle. This strategic move aligns with Coca-Cola's commitment to sustainability, acknowledging the importance of reducing waste and promoting responsible consumption. 🌍 Aldi UK is teaming up with recycling firm TerraCycle to launch a new recycling scheme aimed at tackling plastic and aluminium foil waste. ♻️ The scheme will convert these materials into recycled raw materials which can then be used to produce new products, such as nuts and bolts from the aluminium or plastic waste bins and outdoor furniture. 👥 Aldi customers can participate in this trial nationwide and recycle their empty blister packs via any Royal Mail Post Office or postbox in an envelope with a Freepost shipping label, accessible via the Aldi website. 🌳 Luke Emery, Plastics and Packaging Director at Aldi UK, said: “We are committed to reducing our impact on the environment and continue to look for new ways to promote recycling wherever possible. What does it take for a brand to be able to make the claim of being recyclable? There's probably more to it than you'd expect. For example, even though a product is made of materials that can be recycled, can you make that claim? According recent lawsuits, it depends if recycling facilities will accept the product upon disposal. Keurig Green mountain faced litigation when their coffee pods were recyclable but not accepted at most recycling facilities. Now here's another case, this one having to do with toothpaste tubes. Paper packaging adopted for porridge pots Quaker Oats, a prominent player in the UK porridge pot market, has introduced new pot packaging made from paper, aimed at reducing its annual use of virgin plastic by 200 tonnes.The transition to paper packaging simplifies the recycling process for consumers and contributes to a substantial reduction in virgin plastic used in porridge pots nationwide. While Quaker porridge pots were previously recyclable, the plastic inner packaging had to be separated from the card sheath for recycling. As part of PepsiCo’s sustainability initiative, PepsiCo Positive, this move follows other climate-friendly changes within the company. Quaker Oats, representing 47% of the UK porridge pot market, aligns with the broader efforts of its parent company, which recently introduced paper outer packaging for Walkers Baked multipacks. Initiative to optimise tracing and recycling of single-use plastic packaging in the UK Recycling technology specialist Polytag Limited has announced that UK retailer Marks and Spencer is a founding member of its Polytag Ecotrace Programme. This initiative optimises the tracing and recycling of single-use plastic packaging in the UK by deploying Polytag’s Invisible UV Tag detection equipment in high-volume recycling centres. FMCG brands, retailers, and waste management businesses are invited to participate to unlock detailed data on over 50% of the UK’s household waste recycling stream. As a founding member, M&S will gain real-time insights into the collection and sorting of its single-use plastic packaging across the UK, providing unprecedented barcode-level data on recycling rates. Polytag notes that recycled PET plastic materials are in high demand from FMCG brand owners, and the Invisible UV Tags, printed onto labels during production, are identified by a Polytag UV Tag Reader in recycling centres. This initiative supports Extended Producer Responsibility legislation, encouraging brands to take responsibility for their packaging materials and aims to shake up the industry through collaboration and innovative technology.
