Mechanical Solutions continues to do our part of the $256 million expansion and facelift of the America's Center convention complex in downtown St. Louis. Our team is seen here installing an 1800 ton water-cooled chiller as a part of the Cervantes Phase 1 project. We had to break a new 60,000-pound machine into 3 sections to drift it into the side of the building. #HVAC #mechanicalengineers #mechanicalengineering #construction

I'm diving deep into the world of transient analysis of HVAC and plumbing pump systems. Through my studies, I've realized that many operational issues go beyond traditional methods like charting operating points on a pump curve. Focusing on NPSH (Net Positive Suction Head) has shed light on why pumps can behave erratically, even when NPSH numbers seem acceptable. NPSH criteria are often calculated at a steady state, overlooking transient values during operating point changes and start-up. While this analysis is common in power and process applications, it's also crucial for open-loop domestic and HVAC systems. Transients in suction piping, especially near cooling tower outlets, can lead to air-bound challenges. Stay tuned for my next post, where I'll delve into a sample suction piping layout prone to becoming air-bound. #HVAC #Plumbing #EngineeringAnalysis

HVAC Related Information Info-10. The effective length of ductwork at a fan’s outlet - The effective length of ductwork at the fan's outlet plays a crucial role in system efficiency. Turbulence often results in asymmetrical airflow from the fan outlet. Achieving symmetrical airflow requires adequate duct length, known as 100% effective duct length. As a rule of thumb, the effective length of outlet ducting should be no less than 2.5 duct diameters when duct velocity is 2500 FPM or less. For every additional 1000 FPM, one duct diameter should be added. Why do I need a fire damper, it’s an external wall? When I was new to the industry, I always assumed fire dampers were only applicable to fire rated internal walls because that’s where most instances occur. However, there are some instances where external walls also have a FRL (fire resistant level). A few instances which come to mind: 1. Substation. The power authority usually has very prescriptive ventilation designs for the substation which includes fire dampers in intake and discharge louvres. E.g. Citipower 2. External walls in proximity to adjoining allotments or another building on the same allotment. See figure below from the NCC2019 guide. Are there any other common instances worth highlighting? _______ I try to make regular posts on topics relevant to building services mechanical contractors.
