I had the privilege of a truly insightful session with Sudhir Dasamantharao, Senior Director & Head - Global Business Services - Asia Pacific at Boston Scientific. As an intern at Boston Scientific, I gained invaluable real-life insights into corporate life, received profound advice on both professional and personal development, and learned the art of networking within the corporate community. Sudhir sir, coming from a Finance background, imparted wisdom that resonated deeply with me. When I asked him about the most crucial aspect of Finance, his answer was simple yet profound: "You have to be accurate with numbers!" This principle underscores the essence of financial discipline. Additionally, his advice on learning to effectively engage with people left a lasting impression on me. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to work in an environment that fosters such growth and learning. I had the honor of serving as a judge at a recent Pfizer hackathon focused on tackling health equity barriers. What a thrill to witness the innovative ideas presented by teams representing some of the country's best universities! The experience filled me with hope for an even brighter future as these young minds tackled complex challenges with creativity and passion. #PfizerProud Pfizer hosted a Digital Hackathon featuring 9 participating universities local to NYC. Participating students pitched a health equity software solution on how we as a world can help eliminate health disparities. Health Equity is a fundamental right that ensures everyone, regardless of their background, has access to quality healthcare. The Hackathon helped foster Pfizer's mission of creating breakthroughs that change patients' lives by crowdsourcing innovative solutions for health equity. This opportunity allowed universities to experience Pfizer's culture, engage in networking opportunities, and develop new skills. Last Sunday, I had the opportunity to attend a thought-provoking sermon at our local church. The message centered on leadership and integrity, discussing the profound responsibility of leaders in our society. What resonated with me most were the preacher's insights into the three main types of leaders: 1. A leader whom the people want. 2. A leader whom the people deserve. 3. A leader after God's own heart. As I reflect on these principles, I'm reminded of my imminent completion of a year-long medical internship, the final step before obtaining full licensure as a medical doctor. The journey to this point hasn't been without its challenges. Many of my colleagues, despite their qualifications, have faced unnecessary delays and bureaucratic hurdles in their path to practicing medicine. This situation has caused immense uncertainty and mental anguish among aspiring healthcare professionals. Recently, the inadequate budgetary allocation for medical interns has exacerbated these issues, directly affecting countless young professionals who are ready and eager to contribute to our healthcare system. This shortfall in leadership and decision-making is a stark reminder of the consequences when meritocracy takes a backseat to political favoritism. Therefore, I've committed myself to civic education initiatives starting today. My goal is simple: to foster a more informed electorate by 2027. Let's transcend divisive factors such as tribe, slogans, and religion, and instead, focus on electing leaders based on their merit, sound ideologies, and commitment to genuine public service. Together, let's strive for a future where leadership is synonymous with responsibility and integrity, and where every voice is heard and valued. Great to visit Google yesterday to learn more about YouTube Health, as part of the NHS Summer Transformation Internship. A few key takeaways - ℹ Access to information is a determinant of health 👉 People are spending a lot of time on YouTube 📐 YouTube uses a 'health shelf' (top banner of three videos) to promote content from trusted and credible sources The visit was also a reminder of how challenging it is for big tech to play in healthcare. Healthcare is fragmented, highly regulated, less agile, and less profitable than other sectors. For the NHS specifically - the gap in workforce digital skills makes it hard to adopt new products and practices. But the opportunity and potential is so great! 🚀

One of the great challenges early in my professional life was trying to launch my academic career while balancing clinical commitments and raising a family. There were times when the juggle left me feeling quite lonely.   In my new role as the University of Melbourne’s Head of Medicine, a major focus will be supporting early career researchers so they feel less alone – no matter where they work.   Medicine can be a field of silos and that can be isolating, particularly when you’re starting out and you may be placed at hospital rotations where you feel disconnected from the mentors, colleagues and friends you trained with.   It’s my firm belief that we’re all better off when we work across organisations and locations in a spirt of collaboration, not competition. I want to bring people together to learn from and lean on each other, celebrating our diverse experiences.   There is so much talent among this next generation of clinician-scientists –people like my registrar Dr Alex Yao – and my mission is to equip them with the skills and support they need to build successful and sustainable careers.   Strong, diverse and empowered multidisciplinary teams, who recognise and value each person’s unique strengths and skills, are the engine room of research success.    We’ll be organising events that bring people together across sites and disciplines. Because connection is the key to our collective achievement. I can’t wait to see what’s in store.   #medicine #collaboration #medicalresearch
