In the UK, the British Council's report suggested that changes in migration policy and rising study costs may lead to a decline in international student mobility to British universities this year, potentially ending the "post-COVID boom." International Medical Graduates (IMGs), who constitute a significant portion of healthcare workers in Canada, encounter barriers in obtaining medical residencies due to quotas and preferential treatment for domestic graduates within the residency system. In response to the challenge, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada / Immigration, Réfugiés et Citoyenneté Canada has pledged up to $86 million to support the recognition of international credentials for approximately 6,600 highly skilled immigrant healthcare professionals.

"Some international students may find themselves navigating microaggressions and stereotyping based on race, ethnicity, gender identity, religion, perceived immigration status, accent/language, and other dimensions of diversity. " DEI leader Malaika Marable Serrano, PhD tackles the challenges faced by higher education institutions in DEI, crucial strategies for fostering inclusivity, and the role of global efforts in promoting equity and inclusion within the academic sphere.

In the first half of 2023, Nigerians became Canada’s fastest-growing international student group, experiencing a 44% surge in study permits issued and surpassing the total for all of 2022. Around 18,000 study permits were granted to Nigerian students, outpacing all other countries except India.

Universities Australia is calling on the Albanese government to allocate $493 million for fee-free university places targeted at disadvantaged students in critical skill areas in a bid to bolster enrollments and stimulate economic growth. The initiative mirrors the successful fee-free TAFE program, aiming to address the decline in higher education enrollments amid the growing demand for skilled workers.

Indian students in American universities are expected to increase by over 1 million annually by 2030, occurring alongside a decline in the US college-age population. In Canada, the ban on foreign ownership of housing has been extended for two years to address affordability concerns, alongside limits on international student permits and post-graduation work permits. Meanwhile, UK universities are reviewing international student admissions to address controversy over recruitment practices, targeting “bad practice” among agents. Provinces and territories, weighted by population, will allocate the study permit cap. As part of this process, international students must obtain both a CAQ and an attestation letter from the respective province before applying for a study permit.
