I had an interview scheduled for an entry-level helpdesk position. The candidate arrived on time in a nice blue shirt. He seemed nice. Unfortunately, we couldn't hear each other. Having had interviews all day, I figured it would be an issue from his end and suggested some troubleshooting fixes. When things didn't seem to work, I offered to switch to a different meeting platform. It looked like he was still trying to figure things out on his own for a few minutes, and then he left abruptly. I waited for him to show up on the new meeting, but he never did. I emailed him, asking him what the issue was and offering assistance. He replied with the email below. I felt quite disappointed. We could have tried more. I see how it could have taken a hit on his confidence when he couldn't get his audio to work. However, technical issues happen all the time. I see it happen even with experienced professionals who have been in IT for years. If you're someone trying to get into IT, please know that while technical knowledge is expected from you, how you respond and find solutions is what truly matters in this industry. And, sometimes, all it takes is just believing in yourself a little bit more.
