98 things all Brand Managers have to be an EXPERT in to survive. My time spent with FMCG brand managers at Reckitt and P&G showed me the depth and breadth of knowledge required to call yourself a marketer. I’m convinced if brand management was codified into a course, it would take longer than charters like CFA. These are not optional good-to-know skills, but essential components of doing the job! You can see why a lot of brand managers go on to become CEOs; the breadth of expertise, and variance in tasks required, combined with P&L responsibility, means a lot of same skills translate. Have you ever seen unicorns and rainbows in a category strategy workshop? If you've worked with us there's a chance they may have popped up somewhere and surprised you .. Why? Because we often start with some light-hearted, positive thinking exercises (with a serious point behind them). Many larger organisations want to emulate the approach (and the sales!) that start-ups and challenger brands often enjoy but they get caught up and dragged down by analysing the competition and trying to fix issues. It stands to reason that if you spend a lot of time focusing on problems, it can be hard to feel positive. Whereas celebrating success can be just as effective in identifying opportunities by focusing on what you're already good at, and doing more of it, more often 😊 And if you, or your sales team aren't feeling positive about your brands or products it's no surprise that your customers won't be either! So, in some category workshops, we start with a few (simple) questions: * What makes your brand so special? * What should we celebrate? * Do you think everyone knows about this? 💡 A couple years into my career and I finally figure it out - Brand Management is what I want to do! ...but am I any good at it? 🤔 Short answer: YUP! ✅ 🏆 I'm so surprised and proud to have finished in the Top 3 of my Brand Management Cohort from Marketing Week Mini MBA with Mark Ritson The class had so many senior marketers and VP's I was a little worried on how I might measure up but I'm so glad that I took the dive and absorbed everything Mark Ritson had to teach us! (Funny story about Mark incoming soon 👀 ) These three months taught me that not only do I think I'm good at marketing, I'm definitely good at branding too! In managing the branding and marketing for 25+ programs under my current organization YCD, I didn't realise how well equipped I've become in balancing short term performance marketing objectives with longer term brand campaigns. Reflecting on my journey, there was a time when the mere thought of handling brands shoots left me feeling nervous and uncertain.
