Personally, I reckon crumpets are the answer to most of life's problems. They've certainly been a big part of my working life..... 1. I use a process called "crumpet solutions". It is my go to creative problem solving approach and a nice bite of one seriously helps me think outside the box. Try it. An hourly wage is compensation for a portion of your life. For most, the calculation seems pretty straightforward. In their book Your Money Or Your Life, Vicki Robin, and Joe Dominguez give a different perspective. There is time and expense associated with work. Coffee, lunches, clothing, transportation, commute, tools, training, and vacations to forget it all. These have both a time and an expense associated with them. The book runs you through a calculation to give a different perspective on the time/life tradeoff. Add all the extra time spent in a year to your normal shift time. Subtract all the expenses you take on to do your work from your annual net pay. Divide your total annual pay (less expenses) by your total annual time associated with the job (including the indirect, but required time). There is a quick calculator at yourmoneyoryourlife.com if you’d like to run through it. What we are left with is a much different number than the hourly wage a W-2 job gives us. This perspective shift can help us make logical decisions about a job or housing change. A move closer to the workplace can mean 7-8 hours of our lives per week. At the end of the day, we are trading our life energy for money. Is it worth the trade-off?
