Every capstone team starts with a question. For BME’s ‘A New Don’, it was simple: Does sterile wear have to come at the expense of comfort? Meet 'A New Don,' the BME capstone team, with sponsor Owens & Minor. They're tackling this very problem with their innovative design that reimagines cleanroom coveralls without compromising on either front. Their journey started with real user concerns, like frustrations about sweating through uncomfortable coveralls in cleanroom environments. With a focus on breathability, moisture-wicking, and inclusive sizing, "A New Don" isn't just about functionality. And it doesn't stop there – their hijab-inspired head cover addresses a common pain point, making sure everyone feels included and comfortable. Watch the video to get an inside look at their process and journey. https://bit.ly/49RsFOT The Wallace H. #SUexcellence 🏆 In a first-of-its-kind for Africa, the 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 in the Faculty of Engineering at Stellenbosch University (SU) recently acquired the Durham Magneto Optics MicroWriter ML®3, a 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝-𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨-𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬. This machine offers diverse opportunities for research, including cutting-edge medical projects like organ-on-chip medical research, with applications in drug discovery, cancer diagnosis and treatment, cell culture models (growing and maintaining cells in a laboratory) and more. According to Daniël Retief, a PhD candidate and nano-lab manager at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, the machine can make virtually any pattern or design at a very high speed without the need for a photo mask (a pattern of the desired structure, with the shadow of the mask being used to develop the structures) and without the complex supporting infrastructure that usually goes with mask-aligners. ➡️ 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆: https://bit.ly/3uIMitL

Towards efficient analysis, estimation and control of thermal systems In recent years, a wide variety of societally relevant and industrial applications has spurred a growing need for effective thermal control algorithms. Examples of these applications include high-precision mechatronics, where thermally induced mechanical deformations threaten the required accuracy, and in medical applications such as hyperthermia for cancer treatments, where accurate thermal control improves treatment effectiveness as well as patient comfort and safety. In his research, PhD candidate Tomas Meijer has developed systematic and computationally efficient methodologies for the analysis, estimation and (constrained) control of thermal systems. He defended his PhD thesis successfully on June 14th. https://lnkd.in/eDfB8J2B Maurice Heemels Michelle Chong #mechatronics #thermalcontrol #controlsystems #phd
