I recently finished reading a book on Elon Musk written by Walter Isaacson. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Elon himself, but you can’t argue that he hasn’t created some brilliant business concepts.
One concept that I want to share with you is called Elon’s “algorithm”, a distillation of lessons learned while he relentlessly increased production capacity at Tesla.
I have begun using this algorithm often and finding it to be very useful in simplifying solutions, improving consistency, and increasing efficiency with scale.
I’d like to point out that this algorithm, which apparently, he trotted out at almost every meeting, was created AFTER he made a major mistake.
In short, he started at #5 (automate) when he should have started with #1, 2, 3 and 4. An original mistake I have been guilty of making as well.
Thus, it’s critical to do these steps in this order:
1) Question every requirement. Know exactly who it came from. Question it no matter how smart that person is – and especially if it came from a smart person, because people are less likely to question them in the first place.
2) Delete any part of process you can. You may have to add some of them back in later, but if you don’t add back at least 10 percent of them, then you didn’t delete enough. We often do things simply because we’ve always done them.
3) Simplify and optimize. A common mistake is to simplify and optimize a part or process that should not exist in the first place.
4) Accelerate cycle time. Every process can be sped up, but only do this after you follow the first 3 steps. Otherwise, you may spend a lot of time accelerating a process that should have been deleted in the first place.
5) Automate. This always comes last. When you’ve completed the first 4 steps and are left with the things you really need to do and that genuinely add value – then they can be automated effectively.
The book itself received mixed reviews, but for me that wasn’t the point. There are many valuable takeaways I learned which can be applied to other businesses, and which I’ve shared with my own team at Ntiva, Inc.
