Kenya Bixa Limited, a participant of the United Nations Global Compact since 2013 and a leading producer of natural annatto products, has unveiled its inaugural sustainability report. This milestone highlights Kenya Bixa’s commitment to sustainability, positioning it among the leaders in responsible business practices in Kenya. The Kwale based agro-processing company is a major exporter to foreign markets and with increasing demands from global regulations such as the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (#CSRD) and Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD), the report provides detailed insights into the company’s governance, environmental practices, and social impact, including its contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs) Speaking at the launch, Global Compact Network Kenya Executive Director Judy Njino applauded Kenya Bixa for the bold step, noting that the report reflects the company’s clear vision, deep understanding of global challenges and commitment to being part of the solution to pressing societal issues. We had an enlightening session at the UMS Ignite event on August 2nd, focused on the crucial role of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices for businesses in Uganda. Navigating the ESG Landscape in Uganda. My key takeaways: 1. Start at Home: ESG isn't just a corporate mandate; it begins with each of us. Simple actions like reusing, recycling and reducing waste in our daily lives can make a big difference. 2. Corporate Commitment: Integrating ESG into business strategies is essential. As Cathy Adengo highlighted, the world's top ten most profitable companies have successfully incorporated ESG principles into their core operations, ensuring ethical practices and long-term sustainability. 3. Collective Action: Initiatives like the “Taasa Obutonde” campaign, which focuses on tree planting, demonstrate the power of community efforts. We need financial and marketing support to drive such impactful projects. 4. Marketing as a Driver: Marketing plays a key role in driving ESG initiatives by influencing public perception, shaping narratives and promoting sustainable practices. Effective marketing strategies can galvanise support, attract partnerships and amplify the impact of ESG efforts. A heartfelt thanks to our insightful speakers Dison B. Okumu, Cathy Adengo, CPA Dr. James Okello Onyon and moderator Peter Igaga for sharing their expertise and vision. Your contributions are paving the way for a sustainable future in Uganda. Let's embrace our responsibility to protect our environment. As Dison B. Okumu wisely stated, “Everything we see around us is a loan for our children. It's our responsibility to conserve it for the future.” #ESG #Sustainability #UMSIgnite #Marketing #EnvironmentalConservation

Towards Sustainability Development Goals: A Journey from Challenges to Sustainable Triumphs In Nairobi's bustling heart, where urban life intersects with environmental commitment, Beatrice Wanjiru Mwangi embarked on a visionary journey. The founder of Towards Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs), Beatrice aimed to contribute to climate action through her environmental consultancy firm. However, ambitious projects come with challenges. Before joining the program, Towards SDGs faced obstacles hindering growth. Operating without formal registration compromised legal adherence and impacted market reach and revenue. The focus on the environment overshadowed social and governance components, leading to isolation within the industry. 💥 Institutional Obligation: Reporting to Society 💥 🌱 In this era of sustainability reporting, transparency and accountability are paramount for organizations. Even though sustainability reporting within the East African region is still relatively nascent compared to more developed markets, the Report to Society has emerged as a crucial tool for organizations committed to sustainability. 🌱 It is not just a document but a powerful means to engage with diverse stakeholders. In Uganda, Several institutions like Stanbic Bank, Kakira Sugar Works, National Social Security Fund, UMEME Limited, Tullow Oil, and several others have already started on this journey by mapping their sustainability initiatives to the relevant United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) targets in their reports. 🌱 This comprehensive document showcases an organization's efforts to address environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues. It serves as a bridge, connecting your organization with crucial stakeholders in your sustainability journey. This report can serve various stakeholder groups effectively by addressing their unique interests and concerns, demonstrating that their voices are heard and valued. 🌱 Remember to highlight your organization's commitment to environmental sustainability in this report by focusing on explicit, accessible, and impactful content that resonates with your stakeholders.
