Achieving Low Probability of Detection (LPD) in tactical scenarios is a major challenge for defense leaders. While perfect LPD will likely never exist, technologies utilizing the V-band – such as mmWave networks – are proving to be intrinsically LPD. The V-band at 57-71 GHz is an unlicensed mmWave radio frequency band with the unique capability of being LPD by its very physics nature. V-band causes radio signals to resonate perfectly with oxygen molecules in the air – a phenomenon called oxygen absorption. The oxygen creates an incredible spike in attenuation that creates a curtain of invisibility between a tactical team and its adversary. Within the V-band, connectivity truly has an LPD quality. https://lnkd.in/gGnhBGrj It is encouraging to see DOD taking concrete steps to tackle the challenge of overclassification in space which hamper our ability to cooperate and interoperate with our closest Allies/Partners in space. It will be interesting to read the details of this memo to better understand the scope of this new guidance and more interesting still to see if the frozen middle finds a way to undermine its implementation in practice and continue with business as usual.

Overclassification has impeded our ability to cooperate with Allies and Partners. There is clear guidance and intent from the highest levels of the DOD space enterprise to fix this. Our ability to advance cooperation and interoperability depends on overcoming this challenge. Will the frozen middle adequately respond or defend the status quo?

This is a worthwhile read in Global Defence Technology Magazine talking about the role of mesh(ed) networks in the future of battlefield communications. The integration of mesh networks with Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites is certainly the future, allowing connectivity with points anywhere in the world. However, I would argue that IEEE mmWave technology is superior to 3GPP when it comes to connecting troops on the ground. IEEE 5G mmWave networks are self-healing, which means if a node is out of range or otherwise unavailable, the network re-configures to maintain full connectivity by another node stepping in to complete the circuit. https://bit.ly/3STWetD

General John Shaw, who served in the US Space Command, says we’re now in “the third space age.” In this new era, the United States Department of Defense knows it needs better technology to counter space-based threats from Russia, China, and other hostile nations (which I discussed here on LinkedIn yesterday). But the Space Command can’t do it alone. This new battlefield requires an elevated presence in space, with increasingly sophisticated technology for defense, surveillance, and data collection. It requires the ability to analyze massive amounts of data using sophisticated AI tools. And it requires human oversight and judgment. The DoD is big, old, and slow. Developing the kinds of sophisticated technologies necessary to successfully deter and defend ourselves in space will take public-private partnerships with major defense contractors. The DoD’s budget has increased 22.4% since 2019, up to $842 billion for 2024 (shown in the chart from the DoD). Given the elevated level of geopolitical tension, I expect the DoD’s budget to continue increasing, with a greater portion going to contractors who develop modern defense systems. In other words, more money will go to companies operating in space defense. Defense contractors know this, and they’re pumping resources into space-related defense technologies. This is an area that investors should consider, as it is relatively early in development. #spaceindustry #defenseindustry
