Reflective journal SCSH 2163: week 13 Improving fieldwork in community engagement involves several key strategies to enhance effectiveness and impact. First, thorough preparation is essential, including researching the community, establishing clear objectives, and understanding cultural sensitivities. Engaging with community members respectfully and actively listening to their perspectives builds trust and fosters collaboration. Utilizing diverse communication channels and involving local leaders and stakeholders ensures inclusivity and broad participation. Implementing feedback mechanisms and continuously evaluating and adapting strategies based on community input enhances relevance and effectiveness. Additionally, providing adequate training and support for fieldworkers in communication, empathy, and cultural competence further strengthens engagement efforts. By prioritizing these approaches, fieldwork in community engagement can achieve meaningful and sustainable outcomes that benefit all stakeholders involved.

This research looks great. Includes helpful definition of social and cultural infrastructure: "those assets whose primary function is to connect us to each other and enable citizens to consume and produce culture. They are the spaces that, amongst other things, help generate a sense of belonging and an place attachment while also supporting wellbeing, self-expression, and creativity." Also highlights gaps in our understanding of what is driving benefit. Important for thinking about funding: which benefits do we get by investing in the infrastructure itself (e.g. satisfaction in where we live, optimism?) and which needs project funding to 'activate' those spaces to bring people together (e.g. creativity, empathy, cohesion). Something we've been thinking about through our research with Belong-The Cohesion and Integration Network on the role of events, which use social & cultural infrastructure like parks, libraries and museums to bring people together.

I am excited to share my latest publication coauthored with Jodi Laufgraben, "The Value of Community: Stakeholder Perspectives at an Urban-Serving Research University." Using a mixed methods approach, we examined a subset of strategic planning data to consider opportunities and tensions in a university's efforts to serve its communit(ies). Although stakeholder groups' perspectives on how to best fulfill the community-minded value were varied and even paradoxical, we argue that engaging and valuing this range of viewpoints can help advance community engagement goals. https://lnkd.in/eW5iXxZG

Collaborative research | Exploring lived/living experience knowledge and opportunities for social change
The more I talk to people about lived/living experience involvements in ending homelessness and creating the society we want to be living in, the more important I think it is that we are clear about why we do what we do. For me, this includes having robust values and a willingness to engage with any points of tension. I very much appreciated seeing this spirit expressed at The Constellation Project's recent Lived Experience Practice Forum. The forum also got me thinking about translating knowledge into opportunities for action.
