Pay attention to escape rescue.
Having a confined space rescue plan is crucial to ensuring worker safety. A well-structured plan allows for a quick and efficient response in emergency situations, minimizing risks and saving lives.
Routine training (drills) ensures that staff are familiar with the necessary procedures and equipment. Constant practice prepares workers to act competently in critical situations, preventing accidents and protecting lives in the workplace.
You are better off getting the entry people to wear a harness and line where possible, that way rescue people can connect the rope to a winch and can pull out injured people without risk to themselves. Follow proper confined space procedures including air monitoring and the creation of a detailed task/area specific rescue plan.
Don’t hate me for it, but…
There were so many ‘disproves’ provided within the video clip that made me…unimpressed if I am honest.
Having read the comments applied to the original Authors entry I think the complete wrong message was put across and completely swallowed up!
That video is a great clip but interesting to consider one of life’s important learnings when watching it…for me, having trained so many in BA Awareness and Rescue, I always look for the safest means of practical rescue and this video is far from it…perception and understanding of a situation and application to apparent Confined Rescue Procesures differs greatly.
Where to start with it…
1. Is it advocating a ‘snatch rescue’ from an apparent harmful atmosphere (hence BA use)? If so then fail on so many fronts.
-BA set unsecured
-No ‘pre-entry’ (face seal test) achieved by the wearer
-The ability for the ‘rope attendant’ to drag the rescuer (should they be overcome) is in fact not as simple as given the impression.
Further to the Authors script, “constant practice prepares workers to act competently in critical situations” is not what we have seen here at all…the opposite in fact. There was very little demonstration of competency throughout unless I acknowledge the knot tying to the rescuers ankles.
Why am I so vehemently driven by this clip…well simply that there are reasons why so many deaths are still attributed to Confined Space working (still in 2024!)…and a large % of them being the Attendant or so called Rescuer/s.
Wrong training style, wrong application and wrong demonstration to send out.
As I said…don’t hate me

Emergency drills should not just focus on employee's response in case eventuality. Of particular interest should be the facilities and systems especially the first responders.
Conduct a drill and check also how fast your first responders/ first aider get to the scene of the incident.

Why training is an important Hierarchy of control?
Training saves lives ! I believe that training is crucial part in every organization for preventing accidents and promoting secure work environments. Any message that is delivered is recorded in our minds. And we deliver it at the time of need. A person who trained on how to use a fire extinguisher will definitely put his skills to the test at the time of fire emergency thus protecting people, property and environment. Training helps individuals understand risks, use protective measures correctly, and contribute to a safer workplace.
The more interactive the session is, the more engagement you ll receive during the training. Work Safely ! Go home safely!

Confined Spaces - Part 5: TRAINING IS KEY TO SAFETY
Proper training and certification are non-negotiable when working in confined spaces. Here's why:
1. HAZARD RECOGNITION: Trained workers can identify potential dangers before entering confined spaces.
2. PROPER EQUIPMENT USE: Training ensures workers know how to use safety equipment effectively.
3. EMERGENCY RESPONSE: Certified personnel are better prepared to handle emergencies swiftly and efficiently
4. LEGAL COMPLIANCE: Certification ensures your workplace meets regulatory standards, reducing liability.
INVEST IN SAFETY: Continuous training keeps skills sharp and knowledge up-to-date, protecting your team and ensuring a safe work environment.
Ask us how we can help you meet your regulatory obligation and keep yourself and others compliant and safe through standardized training in CS awareness, entry, and rescue procedures. We can develop and deliver training programs customized to your specific needs.
Join us next week for a wrap-up on best practices for maintaining a safe workplace when dealing with confined spaces.
