EDSE - for ‘Boat Sampling’ Electric Discharge Sampling Equipment (EDSE) was developed in Japan by KMTL and further modified by ETD, building various types of mounting frames for cutting samples from difficult-to-reach places in metallic structures. EDSE has been used to aid in the condition/life and crack assessment of industrial components (pressure vessels, turbine rotors, valves, piping etc.) and other metallic structures (such as oil and gas platforms, theme parks etc.). Unlike the traditional mechanical ‘boat sampler’, with EDSE, the surface damage, if any, is of the level of only a few microns. With EDSE sampling the resulting cavity leaves rounded edges with ~4 mm radius and no stress concentrations. The process of cutting uses a consumable electrode that removes material via electric spark erosion, with clean water to remove debris and provide a cooling medium. In pressure vessel design and operation, it’s crucial to distinguish between Design Pressure and Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP). Here’s a quick breakdown: 1-Design Pressure Definition: The pressure a vessel is designed to handle during normal operation, including small surges. Purpose: Used for designing the vessel (material strength, size, wall thickness). Set By: Process engineers based on operating conditions with a safety margin. 2-MAWP (Maximum Allowable Working Pressure) Definition: The highest pressure the vessel can safely handle during operation at a specific temperature. Purpose: Represents the vessel’s actual pressure limit after testing. Set By: Manufacturers, based on material strength and design tests. Example: Two-Phase Separator Operating Pressure: 80 bar Design Pressure: 100 bar (with a 20% safety margin) MAWP: 110 bar (based on testing). Scenario: The separator operates safely at 80 bar (below both Design Pressure and MAWP). In case of a surge, the PSV opens at 105 bar to protect the vessel, preventing damage. --Important Question-- When setting the PSV, should I base it on Design Pressure or MAWP? The PSV set point is typically based on MAWP, as this is the maximum pressure the vessel can safely handle without failure. Here are the general steps for 11kV HT (High-Teperature) cable jointing: 1. Preparation: - Ensure proper safety gear and training - Gather necessary tools and materials (e.g., jointing kits, heat shrink tubes, etc.) - Verify cable specifications and jointing instructions 2. Cable Preparation: - Clean and strip the cable ends - Remove any insulation or sheathing - Trim the conductors to the correct length 3. Jointing: - Apply jointing compound or tape to the conductors - Assemble the jointing kit (e.g., sleeves, adapters, etc.) - Connect the conductors, ensuring proper torque and alignment 4. Insulation and Sheathing: - Apply heat shrink tubes or insulation to the joint - Ensure proper coverage and sealing 5. Testing and Verification: - Perform electrical tests (e.g., megger, hipot, etc.) - Verify joint integrity and cable performance 6. Documentation and Record-Keeping: - Document the jointing process and test results - Maintain records for future reference and maintenance This week at work place was really exciting as the jointing of 11KV for my plant today was a huge success after #HIPOT test was carried out to confirm the integrity of all the three joint and the cable as well, the cable was confirmed okay.
