Tech giants Apple and Google are in talks to bring Google's Gemini to iPhones.  This is big news – and, if it comes about, seems like a win-win for both companies. It would represent a massive leap forward for Apple, which has famously been lagging behind in the race for AI dominance. If they were to present a phone without AI they would miss out entirely on 2025. Google would also get access to all those iPhones to feed into Gemini – which, while good, is still not quite on par with ChatGPT. One of the most interesting things about this deal? Apple have held talks with Google about building Google's Gemini artificial intelligence into the iPhone. This would buy Apple time to continue to develop its own AI model whilst ensuring it competes with current AI powered Smartphones on the market. A secondary benefit is cost - Apple doesn't store user data in the way its competitors do, resulting in a smaller dataset to train its AI model on. Partnering with Google would lower costs compared to buying datasets. So, whether ita OpenAI + Samsung or Google + Apple — or some other combination — looks like AI integrated smartphones will be here REALLY soon. A couple of things jump out: 1. Does this mean that Apple’s own AI progress is not as far along? 2. Is this a good sign indicating effective collaboration, building existing relationships and advancements? 3. Is this a bad sign - foreshadowing insurmountable market power and barriers to entry ultimately resulting innovation stiffling? 4. Does it matter, exponential innovation being what it is - should we even apply the old rubric?
