# Aircraft accident, # Aerodrome inspections, # Runway strip, # Airport Preliminary investigation report revealed that aircraft left MLG tires had impacted a large concrete “manhole” designed as an electrical junction box for lights/utilities at the airport. As a result of the impact, the left MLG separated from the airplane at the fuse pins near the rear spar as designed to prevent more severe damage to surrounding structures. It seems it is the part of Runway strip.  Runway strip should be designed and maintained as per specification laid down in Annex 14, V-1 and ICAO Doc 9157 part 1. The requirements are as follows:  Within the general area of the strip adjacent to the runway, measures should be taken to prevent an aeroplane’s wheel, when sinking into the ground, from striking a hard vertical face such as but not limited to the drainage elements, as significant damage to the aircraft landing gear may result. In the case of construction, such as runways or taxiways, where the surface must also be flush with the strip surface, a vertical face can be eliminated by chamfering from the top of the construction. Drainage, manhole cover should be capable of withstanding the occasional passage of the aeroplane.   Aerodrome authority should have been taken these requirements into considerations to avoid such damage post accidents.
