Investment secures land for future generations - A day on the farm with Oxbury customer Julian Taylor of Home Farm, Starston. A new report from Croatan Institute and Self-Help explores the lending practices of Farm Credit – the largest lender in the agricultural sector, making approximately 45% of all agricultural loans. 85% of Farm Credit’s borrowers hold only 17% of the total amount of loans outstanding, averaging less than $500,000 per loan. The loans held by the top 1% of Farm Credit’s borrowers average over $28.5 million, and approximately $206 billion of the $373 billion outstanding in Farm Credit’s loan portfolio is held by only 1.2% of its borrowers. This imbalance in lending across Farm Credit’s loan portfolio is a deviation from its initial mandate as a Government Sponsored Enterprise designed to support small farmers. UNPLANN BORROWING, FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND SOCIAL MEDIA IMPACT ON SMALL FARMERS   When we divide agriculture and animal husbandry into sub-branches, we reach many business and business branches. We mainly work with small individual business modeling. In Antalya, where I live, mostly greenhouse farming, gardening and animal husbandry are done.   As a result of dogmatic reasons in the region, it is very normal to choose it as a profession because his family is engaged in these jobs. At this point, the choices and practices made by people who do not have financial interpretation, planning and management skills cause these small businesses and families to waste their seasons and years in a world where time is very important.   Social media is no longer just a place where city-living people show themselves, it has taken shape and entered every life and every environment.   Just as there are profiles in city life that put their cars in front of the hookah cafe and put their iPhones on the table, we now have farmers who come to the village cafe with a Mercedes or a BMW and show their iPhones.   Just as there are profiles sharing their holidays on the beach during the summer months, we also have farmers having barbecues posting photos from their plateau houses with the hashtag "tiredness of the season".   It is not my place to comment or criticize anyone's way of living their life or spending their money, but the main point that is not normal is that society has turned this event we are experiencing into a status. This model has become an effort among people to prove themselves against others.  A different life model emerges with the efforts of those who have no situation to equalize themselves as a result of movements to see themselves as superior through materialism and ownership. It is at this point that wrong choices and wrong moves are made... A farmer living 20 km away from the vegetable market sells his 2004 model vehicle worth 350,000 lira and buys a new model worth 1,700,000 lira. While your current vehicle can carry your workload for at least 15 years... Your land is already 8-10 acres and the distance to the Vegetable Market is 20 km altogether. Is it worth taking out a loan and going into debt? There are also those who go into debt of 3,000,000 million for a tractor that they need for 15 days a year. These friends of ours who try to equalize themselves through a sense of ownership, because of these wrong investments and expenditures, The seedlings sold in cash for x lira are purchased on credit for x+10 lira. They buy pesticides and fertilizers that are sold in advance for x lira, for x+10 lira on credit. There are many major problems that create a domino effect in agriculture in the country and need to be solved, but unfortunately with this mindset and business model that is far from planning, small farmers cannot even stand still and are going backwards day by day. #agriculture #antalya #executive
