Today is #WorldWetlandsDay, and it serves as a reminder that we have a lot of work to do in Mississippi to decide how we want to regulate, protect and restore our valuable wetlands. Many wetlands across the U.S were protected by the Clean Water Act until last May when a Supreme Court decision in Sackett v. EPA revoked federal protections for many wetlands. Now Mississippians must decide what protections we want to provide for the many wetlands in our state that are no longer covered under federal jurisdiction. Wetlands are essential to our way of life in Mississippi. They act like kidneys in our system to filter water and improve water quality. They provide flood protection and reduce storm surge. And most people recognize that wetlands are essential habitat that support so many species important to the environment, to our recreation, to our hunting and fishing, and to our economy. The intersection between economic development and protecting the environment can sometimes lead to difficult conversations, but the two issues do not have to be mutually exclusive because a healthy environment supports a healthy economy in Mississippi. This #WorldWetlandsDay let’s resolve to work together to protect our wetlands, so they can keep protecting us and adding to our quality of life in Mississippi.

In California, we recognize that every human being has the right to safe, clean, affordable, and accessible water. That’s why we’re investing in efforts like the County Drought Resilience Planning Assistance program. In 2023, this program offered California’s 58 counties the choice between hands-on technical support or financial assistance to establish a standing drought and water shortage task force and develop a county drought resilience plan. Together, we’re taking action to prepare for the next drought by partnering with counties to ensure that communities statewide have the resources they need to proactively plan for future dry conditions. #DrinkingWaterWeek #Water #California

DWR is taking action to prepare for the next drought by partnering with counties to ensure that communities statewide have the resources they need to proactively plan for future dry conditions. DWR’s County Drought Resilience Planning Assistance Program offers counties the choice between hands-on technical support or financial assistance up to $125,000 to establish a standing drought and water shortage task force and develop a county drought resilience plan. Most recently, these grants have been awarded to the counties of El Dorado, Marin, Santa Barbara, and Tulare with more to come in 2024. CITY OF TUCSON AWARDED $1.5M FOR TURF REBATE REMOVAL PROGRAM - The Water Infrastructure Finance Authority of Arizona (WIFA) recently awarded the City of Tucson a $1.5 million grant for a non-functional turf removal rebate program to promote water conservation and efficiency as part of the city’s Drought Preparedness and Response Plan. Tucson Water will create a non-functional turf removal rebate program for both City of Tucson parks and private property owners. The program will be administered by Tucson Water’s Conservation Program and implemented in part with the Parks and Recreation department. Reduced water demand decreases both potable and reclaimed water production, resulting in more water remaining in local aquifers. The turf removal program aligns with the City of Tucson’s long-term planning policies described in Plan Tucson and the One Water 2100 Plan. https://lnkd.in/gmTPjFWV #Water #Infrastructure #Community #Conservation
