"I was diagnosed with MS on July 26, 2016—news that forever changed my life. While it was a relief to have a diagnosis within months of experiencing migraines, aura headaches, fatigue, dizziness, numbness, tingling in my extremities, and Lhermitte's sign (an electric shock sensation when moving my neck), the road ahead was challenging. It involved steroid IVs, MRIs, blood tests, and medication trials. Like many women in their 30s, I dreamed of having a family, and I refused to let MS take that away. Once I adjusted to my diagnosis, I researched ways to pursue motherhood and chose foster parenting to make a meaningful impact. In the fall of 2019, I became a certified foster parent for the City of Alexandria, VA. Over the past five years, I’ve cared for more than 20 children, ages 0-18, and adopted my first foster placement, Isabelle, who came into my life at just three days old. She, along with the children I care for, gives me the strength to push through even the hardest days. I live to provide love and safety to children who need it most. With the support of my family, friends, and community, I continue to fight for these deserving children. I’m honored to have been named Alexandria’s 2024 Foster Parent of the Year".
