Research published by the MIT Sloan Management Review notes some important points: · Professional development efforts should have clear goals that are aligned with the organization’s needs and priorities · Much about existing leadership development programming is ineffective because it is not informed by a clear vision, the methods are not appropriately complex, and the behavioral impact is not clear · Stronger partnerships between organizations and development providers are needed
College and university budgets are tight and professional development is often one of the first expenditures to be cut. While this may provide short-term financial benefits, the longer-term implications can be problematic. Organizational needs and priorities change, often requiring an evolving skill- and mind-set for leaders and their teams. The absence of a sustained investment in professional development can undermine the preparation of leaders to meet new demands. What Training Are All Managers Demanding? In a survey of 1,500 learners conducted by Chief Learning Officer magazine, “improving coaching skills” was cited as the most in-demand training by managers. Yet, despite increased investment in coaching skills training, many managers who have undertaken ‘Manager as Coach’, ‘Leader as Coach’ and ‘Coaching Conversations’ programmes have been unable to put the skills into practice due to time pressure and the realities of work not lending themselves to formal coaching situations. Whilst HR professionals bemoan their managers’ lack of a coaching mindset, research from the CIPD underlines their concern showing that employees in the UK rank coaching skills (“coaches me on the job”) at the bottom of a list of 15 of their manager’s competencies. No surprise perhaps that 93% of organisations surveyed were unable to assess the return on investment from their coaching programmes. To learn about a behavioural change programme that has now been proven in government research conducted by the London School of Economics to deliver an average of 74 x ROI per learner, send me a message. #TheAnswerIsAQuestion #STARmanager #OperationalCoaching #Management #Leadership #Coaching
