"Learn parenting here" This simple phrase - "learn parenting" - in Dr. Jamie Wilkey 🚀's post - is revolutionary. Why? Because we've been told over and over that there is a "maternal instinct" and the insinuation there is that parenting just comes naturally. At first glance, the concept of a "maternal instinct" feels positive... but when you break it down, it's actually pretty pernicious - because when mothers find parenting not-very-natural and actually-very-hard, they tell themselves the story, "Something is wrong with me." Over and over, I hear from parents: "I know I need to invest in more support ... and yet for some reason, if I do, it feels like admitting I am a bad parent." Isn't this interesting? We invest in continuing education courses at work precisely because we are *good* at our jobs, not because we're bad at them. We take classes in knitting or cooking or potty because we *love* these areas and feel excited about learning more, not because we're failures. A simple phrase like Dr. Jamie Wilkey 🚀wrote - "learn parenting here" - has the power to chip away at the "maternal instinct narrative," which means more parents seeing seeking support as a sign of strength, not weakness. Parenting does not come naturally. Or, I guess parenting *the way our parents parented us* may come naturally, but parenting in a way that is aligned with your values and the way you want to show up to your kids... nope. That doesn't come naturally. It's a set of skills to learn and practice. And this is actually very hopeful, because as Dr. Jamie Wilkey 🚀indicated, there's now a hub to learn these very skills - and feel empowered, hopeful, and sturdy. Check out what we're doing at Good Inside to become part of the movement of parents who know that they deserve better. We can't wait to welcome you!
