Our May First Friday Meeting is this FRIDAY May 3rd from 12:30pm-2:30pm! 🎉 The City of Muncie has been proactive in addressing housing and neighborhood blight through the formation of the Muncie Land Bank. There are also other organizations, both government (Public Housing Authority), and nonprofit organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity that are working to ensure that housing is affordable to low - and moderate - income households. None of these agencies however ensure long term affordability for home owners. Community Land Trusts provide one means to ensure that housing for LMI remains affordable and sustainable over the long term. In this talk, Dr. Burayidi provides an account of the current state of housing in Muncie and how Community Land Trusts can help alleviate the housing affordability problem for low - and moderate - income households. I'm a big advocate for building new housing. I've developed housing on church land in the past and I have a number of projects in the pipeline currently. Some of the churches in our RootedGood Good Futures Accelerator are developing affordable housing as a way to serve their community. BUT developing housing on church land is not a magic solution. It is far from easy. It isn't always the best idea for use of church land. And most of all, it is not the responsibility of churches alone to solve our nation's affordable housing crisis. This Bloomberg article takes a good look at some of the challenges that limit the extent to which churches can address affordable housing using their land. #goneforgood #goodfutures #affordablehousing #propertydevelopment

Join So They Can's 1inaMillion community and help us work towards a world where every child has access to quality education — a basic human right that opens the door to ending poverty and building a safer, fairer and more sustainable world. Today, 7 out of 10 of the world’s children living in extreme poverty are in Africa. Many will be denied an education, and instead be forced into modern slavery — including forced labor and child marriage. So They Can supports 33,000+ students living in poverty, in 51 schools throughout Kenya and Tanzania. For just $1 a month you can help us: • Train more quality teachers • Improve school infrastructure • Provide access to safe water and school lunches Be the 1inaMillion who helps children rise from poverty and empowers them to achieve their full potential. https://lnkd.in/g3kk92Db

From addressing common misconceptions about homelessness to understanding the complex challenges faced by those pursuing housing, Miriam and John discuss some of the many facets that it takes to provide real solutions. They also highlight successful models from other cities, discuss the need for affordable and safe housing, and remind us why everyone has a reason to care about this issue. It’s long overdue, but the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released new requirements for removing lead service lines in the U.S. Access to safe and affordable water is fundamental to the health and wellbeing of our communities. It’s crucial to prioritize efforts to remove lead service lines, especially in rural and underserved neighborhoods that have historically been overlooked. Read more about the new requirements here: https://lnkd.in/gHZ4frtZ
Access to safe, affordable water is a cornerstone of a healthy community and a human right. For generations, lead exposure has silently robbed millions of children - especially those living in communities of color, communities with lower incomes, and rural places - of this right. With this regulation in place, our country finally says: no more. RWJF applauds EPA for requiring the removal of all remaining lead service lines in the United States within the next decade. It is now incumbent upon all of us—water utilities, policymakers, community leaders, and philanthropies—to work together to devote the necessary resources to beating that deadline and prioritizing the most affected neighborhoods for immediate action.
