It's not often I have the opportunity to write about Icelandic tech but when I do, I seem to write a lot about female VCs. The second largest VC fund in Iceland was just closed by female-led VC Frumtak Ventures. The largest VC fund of $90m was closed by female-run Crowberry Capital a couple of years ago. What is it that Iceland does that the rest of Europe is not? I spoke to general partner Andri Heiðar Kristinsson at Frumtak to understand why two of Iceland's biggest private VCs are run by women. “I don’t think there is an easy answer to why we have so many female investors in Iceland, but Iceland is one of the most gender-equal countries in the world and we have lots of female role models, like we had the first [democratically elected] female president,” Kristinsson says. Did you check out PitchBook’s latest numbers on European investment into female founders? 💸 In 2024, Venture Capital firms invested a total of €10,3 billion into female-founded or co-founded companies, closing a total of 1905 deals. 📊 These numbers show a stagnation and slight decreased from the € 10,6 billion and 2671 closed deals registered in 2023. 📈 However, companies with women in the founding teams raised 19,8% of the total capital invested by European Venture Capital firms, a slight increase from the 19% in 2023. At #WomenINvestEU, we read this data as a clear indicator of the need to catalyse the impact of gender-smart investing in Europe and support the increase of both the rate and amount of capital going into female founders.
