Gen Z is running twice as much as they’re riding bikes (a stat that’s reversed among Boomers). And the number of people completing marathons is up 20 percent. We talked to different trail runners with lots of of miles under their belts and got their top recommendations on what to be mindful whilst you shop. Fit Your desired fit will determine the texture of your run, Bekah Broe, director of performance footwear at Disappointedtells SELF. “Some models can have a tighter, sleeker fit great for fast, technical trail runs, while others provide a more accommodating fit for endurance efforts,” she says. For example, shoes which have a really precise fit with a narrow toe box are great for precision. On the opposite hand, ones with a large toe box and flat shape will feel more comfortable whenever you’re running over long distances on relatively moderate terrain, but may feel a bit unstable whenever you get onto uneven ground. Either way, the shoe should feel good in your feet and never restrictive, and your toes mustn’t be overcrowded. If you intend to primarily run in hot temperatures, you might need to buy a half size larger than usual to accommodate foot swelling. Cushioning You can generally find trail trainers with minimal, moderate, or maximum cushion. “I select cushioning depending on the terrain,” Kommer says. If you like a snug, stepping-through-clouds running experience, have a look at shoes with a thick, well-padded midsole. Max cushion shoes are an important alternative for recovery runs or mellower trails, but be mindful that that plush ride comes on the sacrifice of stability. Minimal or moderately cushioned shoes will offer a greater feel for the trail, so that you’ll know what’s under your feet and have the option to maneuver calmly and quickly. Finally, truly minimalist shoes are a better option should you’ll be mixing your trail running with rock scrambling. Outsole This is a vital feature for trail runners—and sometimes what separates road trainers from ones which can be trail-capable. Specifically, the lugs and suppleness of the outsole will impact how the shoe feels during your run. Some trail runners have soft rubber outsoles, while others are more rigid. A softer outsole will allow the shoe to flex together with your foot, which is essential to get more surface area in touch with the bottom. However, it won’t be as durable as harder rubber. “If I’m occurring a mountain run where there will probably be numerous rocks, I’ll select something tough and stiffer,” says mountain runner Chanh Nguyen. “If it’s an actual trail run, I’ll select something more flexible that may allow me to run easily.” Deeper lugs will allow for higher grip, potentially meaning fewer slips and falls. Look for an aggressive, deep lug pattern should you plan to wear your shoes on rugged trails or in mud. If you’re sticking to easier dirt paths—or need to use your shoes to run roads, too—search for a more moderate lug pattern. FILA announced the launch of a new premium line, Fila+ this week, with the high profile hiring of Lev Tanju, founder of skatewear brand Palace Skateboards, as Creative Director. This feels a smart move as revenues had been hit in 2023, with the brand struggling last year and the latest figes for Q3 showing $163.44 million in quarterly revenue, a significant 35.1 per cent reduction year-on-year. The brand is supported by the parent company Fila Holdings which IPO’d in 2010 and acquired Acushnet Company, which owns top golf brands such as Titleist and Footjoy Inc. This has proved successful and Acushnet’s quarterly revenue for 2023 increased by 3.3 per cent year-on-year to $602.84 million due to strong demand for Titleist golf balls and clubs, delivering operating profit of $71.6 million for the group. The hiring of Tanju is the next step in a strategy of raising the Fila brand past a nostalgia purchase for the consumer. Last week they also confirmed the promotion of Todd Klein the newly created position of Global Brand President and take on responsibility for all of the label's business activities, including global product and marketing. There is a big opportunity for niche-sports brands such as Fila to grab market share and for them to build the brand outside of a younger teen market which had been so successful through their exclusive partnership with Urban Outfitters over the past 7 years. In addition to this the brand has also been upping its game by re-entering the tennis market and sponsoring the likes of Ash Barty and Diego Schwartzman. Tennis has always been a key part of the heritage of Fila, but also an important brand tool for many luxury brand – Look at the deals for Emma Raducanu with Tiffany & Co. Co and Carlos Alcaraz with Louis Vuitton The Fila+ collection promises and “elevated take on sportswear”, featuring apparel and accessories “that combine high-quality materials with sleek, contemporary design”. It will allow them to broaden their distribution and increase price points, but it is critical the investment is put in place to build the brand with integrity and long-term thinking to deliver authenticity and engagement. Is running culture the new streetwear? Last week, our edition+partner colleague Harry Salmons noted a fascinating parallel between the surge of new running clubs and emerging running brands, and the evolving landscape of fashion, stating: "If marathons are the big events on the running calendar, then running at large is more like… well, streetwear." (https://lnkd.in/ewKE8tUR) That’s a bold take. But one that is increasingly seeming true. Just yesterday, On announced an upcoming collection of training apparel and footwear with musician FKA Twigs. (https://lnkd.in/d7QVgcYR) It's simply the latest sportswear brand to tap into the sport that has many similarities with the early days of streetwear. The rise of running clubs and niche brands like SATISFY® and Tracksmith marks a cultural shift over the last decade. As Nike and adidas diverted their attention, and we saw a decline of third spaces, new entrants stepped in, filling the community void exacerbated by COVID-19. Streetwear itself, once part of a grassroots movement, has meanwhile become part of a multi billion-dollar industry that’s lost its original meaning and has left a void in authentic community-building and cultural influence. The question becomes then, what replaces it? 1. Democratising Culture Streetwear and running share a common ethos of democratisation, bypassing traditional norms in fashion and sports through a spirit of accessibility. Both running and streetwear prioritise commitment over accolades, allowing individuals to redefine their roles without formal credentials. 2. Status and Hype Today's modern runner uses each run as an opportunity to flex, posting their SATISFY® shorts on Strava instead of their Palace Skateboards Gore Tex jacket on Instagram. This resurgence of status is fuelled by the quantifiability of price and exclusivity, reminiscent of streetwear's 'hype' culture. 3. Physical Participation Both running and streetwear demand physical participation, distinguishing the dedicated from the casual. Just as streetwear requires earning one's stripes for acceptance, running culture thrives on active engagement. 4. Local Movements Create Big Waves The global running apparel market is expected to reach $16.3 billion by 2028. Brands of all sizes looking to capitalise on the growth should start local. On and Saucony have already worked with London run club Your Friendly Runners, New Balance sponsored Hackney's Run The Boroughs club, and PUMA Group collaborated with Puresport Run Club. This is just the start. 5.
