#Panama is currently in the midst of a huge crisis. On Oct 20, the government of Panama signed a 20-year contract with Canadian miner First Quantum. The deal gives the miner exploratory rights to 32,000 acres of rainforest, where 1.5% of the world’s copper is located. It also allows for mining near the Panama Canal watershed, which may put pressure on Panama’s already strained #water resources. Now, several small boats have formed a blockade at the Punta Rincón port. Supplies can’t reach the mining site, so it is being forced to reduce operations and may even shut down over the next few days.
