🚅The Mauritanian iron ore train is one of the longest and heaviest trains in the world and the most unique and incredible railway journeys one can take. The train is up to 3 km (1.8 miles) in length, travels on a single track of 704 kilometres (437 miles), with 200 – 300 freight carriages, weighing up to a total of 17.000 tons. The sole purpose of the train is to export iron ore from the mining town of Zouerate to the Port of Nouadhibou via Choum in Mauritania, Northwest Africa. But the state agency, Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière, allows locals and tourists to board the train and use it as a mean of transportation between inland of the country and the coastline. One cannot expect any levels of comfort one would find on other passenger trains around the world, though. This train has no ticket, no conductor, no dining cart, or any sort of announcements. It is not bound to any timetable and may leave earlier or later than the usual departure time. This also means the arrival time is not fixed to a certain time and a single trip can take from 11 to 15 hours under the sun, at an average temperature of 40°C. #zorail #railway #maintenance #demiryolu

Very interesting when comparing the plans by China to move 20,000 TEUS by train very day from east to west. How many trains would they require -how long would it take to travel by freight train China to Europe. Excluding the ‘Stupidity’ of transit across the Caspian into Azerbaijan and through Georgia. Triple handling. Freight train via Northern Iran into Turkey . Planned professionally and executed with the best operators this could kill the shipping industry? 20,500 containers x 6 metres each in length excluding carriage and or coupling would equate to one train per day of 120 kms - or how many trains with max capacity?
Get a airbrake fault , like hosebag pull apart and someone is walking up to 6000m round trip to repair and test continuity air flow. The iron ore railways in northern Western Australia tried all lengths from 800m to 7 km and when 3 km long it proved to costly And loss so went back to 2km and now some are completely automonus with no drivers!
Apart from the heat, the last paragraph is similar the uk train service
Good ol SD40 with their massive cooling system ! More than 50 years old.
84 Tons total ? Probably not. One single carriage must be at least 30 Tons, so 300 of them should be 90’000 Tons …
