Construction News: Heathrow Airport upgrade spend takes off again. "Heathrow has set out plans to spend £2.3bn over the next two years on further upgrades to the airport. Construction is set to begin on San Antonio International Airport's $1.4 billion Terminal C, a 17-gate facility that will nearly double the size of Terminals A and B. As the centerpiece of the airport's $2.5 billion, 20-year development plan approved by the San Antonio City Council, Terminal C aims to support the region's growing passenger demand.

Heathrow third runway ✅ East West Rail ✅ Lower Thames Crossing ✅ Trafford Regeneration ✅ 📺 Lots of positive announcements yesterday and, although BBC News only used a short section of my interview - the 20 seconds when I was describing some of the reasons why major infrastructure projects can be a long time in the making - the fact that such clear support is being provided so early in this Parliament should reduce political risks that have caused delays and downfall of so many major projects. I can’t pretend I’m not disappointed that they didn’t use my line that everything seems aligned for ‘take off’ on Heathrow, but maybe it’s the wrong audience for such awful puns 🙈 ✈️ There’s little chance of spades being in the ground on Heathrow during this term of Government but hopefully the DCO will at least be a long way through Examination or even granted by the time of the next GE. 🚆 Construction on East West Rail Phase 3 should have commenced by then, and that will be a major facilitator of the Ox-Cam economic drive that the Chancellor outlines, whilst enabling works might even commence on LTC before this year is out. 🏡 ⚽️ As for the Trafford regeneration proposal, that has all the potential to be a flagship project for the north. It’s an area of Manchester with huge potential supported by a Local Authority with serious ambition within a Conbined Authority area led by one of the most progressive and change-making Mayors in Andy Burnham. 🔨 No doubt there are all sorts of challenges ahead - not to mention the skills shortage to support projects through consenting and into delivery - but unambiguous political support from Government counts for a huge amount. ⁉️ However, in among all the positivity, I doubt I was alone in wondering what’s to come re Northern Powerhouse Rail? No reference to NPR at all yesterday…. Does anyone know when we’ll hear further on the project that might just be the most needed of them all? Shout out to Lee Corden for the PR support, as ever 👊

#Norwegian state #airport operator Avinor has chosen #Swedish #construction group Ratos to #build a #greenfield airport inside the Arctic Circle. Bodø Airport will be built by its HENT AS subsidiary, which will work with Avinor on the scheme’s #design and #cost specification, after which the job will be carried out as a #turnkey contract. The $720m airport, which is located about a kilometre south of the one it is replacing, will have a 25,000-sq-m of #terminal and operational buildings. When it enters service in 2029, it will be able to handle up to 2.3 million passengers a year. Businesses and people in the region had lobbied the Norwegian government for years to fund a new airport to replace Mo i Rana in Nordland county because its runway was too small for jets to land. It said it would if local businesses raised $17m toward its cost. HENT beat two other teams to the $228m #contract. The company’s chief executive, Jan K. Jahren, said: “The entire bid #process was long and thorough. We used the full breadth of the company’s expertise, together with several external partners. “The #teamwork behind our responses to the award criteria, including price, understanding of the task and #project organisation, meant that we won out over the competition. This is important recognition for all of HENT and our partners.” In April, another Swedish builder, Peab, was picked to build the airport’s runway, taxiways and parking spaces (see further reading). As well as the airport, Avinor plans a new business district to cement Bodø’s role as an #aviation city and hub for connecting north and south #Norway.

Heathrow has announced a £2.3 billion pound accelerated investment plan to upgrade the airport over the next two years. It is the largest private sector capital investment in UK transport infrastructure, with an increase of almost a quarter of a billion compared to previous estimates. The £2.3 billion investment is an uplift of £244 million on previously forecasted investments which will be used to enhance capabilities across all terminals, including baggage delivery and projects to support punctual departures and arrivals. Construction will start early next year for #SiemensMobility on a £100m rail infrastructure, digital engineering, and research and development facility in #Chippenham after planning permission was granted by #WiltshireCountyCouncil. #Bowmer + #Kirland has been confirmed as main contractor on the job. Rob Morris, Joint UK&I CEO and Managing Director for Rail Infrastructure said: “I’m really pleased that construction will soon begin on our world leading digital engineering, and research and development facility.
